GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping

Edit: Don't think I clearly stated my view originally. I will tip IF the service is exceptional. If not, then they will not be getting a tip. Also, I was ignorant to the fact that servers don't get paid minimum wage.. that is pathetic. Apparently in my home state, servers DO get paid the minimum wage, so I don't mind not tipping. If I was living in another state where servers didn't get paid at least minimum, I would tip every time unless the service was appalling.

I am 100% against tipping people in the food industry, word to Reservoir Dogs. Why is it expected for them to get tipped for their service, while others in much more serious services which are arguably more demanding, NEVER get tipped?

The only services I tip, are if I ever get my car washed and detailed.. I'll usually hit dude off with $3-5 depending on how well I think he did.

I thought it was status quo to tip in restaurants??

I'm a great tipper. If I can give a few extra bucks to someone trying to make ends meet, I would do it everytime.

sometimes I feel pressured to leave a tip b\c of the stereotype that "we" dont tip well sometimes...I know its silly but thats in the back of my mind sometimes.

now if its poor service they get NATHAN.

That's awesome of you.. honestly. My question still stands though.. why is it just the food industry? I'm sure there's people who bust their asses in other fields who make the same hourly wage, except without the tips.

No there aren't. As of a few years ago (2005ish), waiters were getting paid I believe $2.49 an hour (may have been in the $2.70s).

Never heard this, but if true then you bring up a compelling point.

I'll tell you right now, my wife works as a server only 3 nights a week and servers, bartenders, bussers only make minimum sometimes more. However when they are serving you and waiting on you hand and foot it is common knowledge that people leave tips in the restaurant food industry. Yet you say you tip someone to wash or detail your car LOL what you cannot wash your car yourself? Same with bartenders are you going to go order a drink and then not tip the bartender? Not smart IMO because you will receive crappy service the rest of the night while he is getting me a drink everytime I walk up because Im dropping him a $2 tip for each beer I order.

I have no problem tipping a waitress/waiter, but only in direct coorelation of how well they do their job. I don't have a minimum that I must give them. I've only done a couple times, but if the server is a complete waste, then no they don't get a tip. I'm actually a very generous tipper, but only to those servers that do their job right.

I always tip at restaurants.. usually the standard 15%, a little more if exceptional.

However the last meal I received (came to $36 +), my waiter recieved a DOLLAR as his tip.. long story why, but let's just say do not say things to others than can be overheard (and yes, I have already e-mailed the company about it).

I think it's status quo because unlike many other jobs in the service industry, a person's income can be influenced directly by job performance. A good waiter should make more money than a bad one. With the way you're doing it, you'd have every one earning the same amount of income...which really isn't fair.

yeah, i feel the same way sometimes but then If i leave a big tip I feel like the waiter/waitress will prolly think im going out of my way to dispell that stereotype. Then again at the end of the day that person will most likely not even remember me.
