Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Has anyone tried something like this when going to a restaurant as I've thought about trying something like this:
Tell your waiter from the get go how much you plan on tipping. Like the maximum amount that they could get serving you. So you tell the waiter that you are starting him or her off at six dollars.
Then tell them based on their service and their attitude, that could come down. It won't go up any further. But it will be deducted from with every little thing that you were not particularly fond of during your time in the restaurant.
So say that they don't give you a refill after a long while. Or walk by your table a few times without asking if you needed anything. That would result in a deduction here and there. That way by the end of the night they can pretty much judge by how much you paid them, how well their service was. Not only that, but they will probably give better service knowing how much they could possibly make. If they don't get a lot in the end, they probably won't think of you as a cheapo considering the amount you started them at.
I know that if I knew how much I could get from the start, I would give the very best service I could.
Has anyone tried something like this? What do you guys think about that?Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Being a former waiter I usually tip 20% if the service is fine. If they screw up an order though or forget to bring something out then I'll tip a little bit less. Everyone that I've talked to that has been a waiter will always end up tipping a little more generously than someone who wasn't because they understand what they had to go through.
Pretty much the only income a server is going to get is from tips because they only get paid like $2.50 and hour. When I waited at IHOP I could easily make $120 any time I worked a weekend breakfast shift, and would make like $75 or so if I worked nights.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Here's my problem with the whole tipping thing at restaurants...
Why does the server at (insert fancy place with expensive food) get tipped more money than a Applebee's or Chili's? They put in the same effort. Why do I tip the server at the fancy place $15 and the Chili's server $5......makes no sense.
And there's not much I hate more than a server complaining about how much money they make. Bottom line is servers are raking in the cash compared to most hourly jobs. My friends come home complaining they only made $60 bucks in 5 hours....thats more than $10 an hour and not taxable! Sometimes they are bringing in over $100 for a night. Give me a freaking break, I work manual labor and make less than that and work three times as hard.Comment

I was just saying to counteract all the sympathetic "we only make X amount per hour".Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Well waiters get paid much less than minimum wage, so the majority of their income is going to come from tips. You don't have to tip if the service was poor, but if it average or good then you are expected to tip at least 15%. Without tips they would just be living off $2.30 an hour.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
I would personally be offended if I was eating at a restaurant with you and you stiffed the wait staff. You claim to be a poor college kid and not a charity, but you detail a Volvo 5 times a year and tip the staff all the while supporting illegal immigration. I don't get it, I'll leave it at that.
I detail my Volvo for $15, with a $3-5 tip.. don't see how that disproves me being a poor college student.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
I don't know how far this franchise extends, but it's called Sonics. It serves burgers and its kind of old fashioned because you can pull up in the parking lot and order your food and people on skates will bring it to you.
If anyone knows the fast food chain Sonic and know what I'm talking about, do you tip them? I never know if I should or not. Or if they are even expecting one.
The only people that I really do not feel like tipping are the guys in the bathroom at clubs.
They give you a paper towel and squirt soap in your hands. I really DO NOT want to tip them at all. But I do it anyway. I figure its a nice deed and whats a dollar anyway.
And the thought always pops into my mind that the guy could really be God trying to judge my character... LOLComment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Okay, so how do people feel about the tip jars at places like Dunkin Donuts or a sandwich place? Do you tip there, and if you do is at the same percentage as you would a server? Being fair those people are doing much more work for you than the server is. I'm just curious how consistent people are with this.
For me if the person did a really good job I will tip them or if I just don't feel like carrying around loose change on me. One of our local pizza places that specializes in takeout has one, the only time they get tipped is when it's spare change. Why? Because it is family operated in every aspect, everyone knows this, yet they beg for tips like a common panhandler.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
I've never understood that either, it is really sort of creepy. I am perfectly capable of getting soap and a towel myself. The only time I will tip is if I use the cologne they put out and that's because as I understand the situation it is that guy's cologne.Comment
