I usually only tip at places (in terms of those little jars) I know the people or somewhere I know is a small time locally owned business. They get much more sympathy if it is labeled for "college fund" at this ice cream place I go to.

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Okay, so how do people feel about the tip jars at places like Dunkin Donuts or a sandwich place? Do you tip there, and if you do is at the same percentage as you would a server? Being fair those people are doing much more work for you than the server is. I'm just curious how consistent people are with this.
For me if the person did a really good job I will tip them or if I just don't feel like carrying around loose change on me. One of our local pizza places that specializes in takeout has one, the only time they get tipped is when it's spare change. Why? Because it is family operated in every aspect, everyone knows this, yet they beg for tips like a common panhandler.
I go to a restaurant and place a to go order, I would tip a little more. For one it's a pain sometimes for the bartenders (who are usually the ones that have to take the to go order, put it in, and get all of the condiments ready for the customer) and two, they may have to tip out on it. I wouldn't tip as much as if I was eating in, but I would def try 12%-15% or so.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
I wouldn't tell them each time I made a deduction. It would be at the very end of the service when I leave they'd see how much they lost.
I would present it to them something like this:
"How you doing? I want to work out something with you. This decision is up to you. I want to start you off with six dollars tip tonight. But, if there are a few hiccups in service every so often, I'm going to have to take away from that tip. So if everything is wonderful, you get it all. Would you be cool with that?"
If they say yeah, then it wouldn't be so "snobby" I don't think. Lol.
And again, I would not be telling them every time they messed up when I'm making a deduction.
It seems pretty fair to me. But I'm just trying to see it from the perspective of others.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
What about delivery boys, how much do you guys tip them?
I've always gave them like 10-15%. Never tip them as much of a waiter since they are paid at least minimum wage, but I understand that they have to pay for their own gas.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Granted people may be doing this, but I don't need to be let in on the whole play by play of it. If you want to do this, fine, but I wouldn't advise letting your server in on it“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
To me it depends with them, there are a couple of guys from a Chinese place that I tip pretty well. They are very friendly and always have a joke or take interest in something they notice from the door.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
I think that the majority of us would change our outlook on tipping if we worked off tips at one point or another.
I used to deliver pizzas a while back. Might not be the same as working in a restaurant or other job, but getting tipped sure did mean a lot to me and the other drivers. If I got a good tip from somebody, and I saw their name or house come up at a later date, I would do my best to get their order there as fast as possible anytime they ordered.
If I got a bad tip, or nothing at all, next time I don't care so much when they order. There are times when I would have to take 5 or 6 deliveries at once, and guess who I already had planned to get their order last, even if they ordered ahead of everyone else.
It also just upset me and my fellow drivers when we got little if anything at all. They'd come back cussing and calling the person names. Just puts every one in a bad mood. It's even worse if they had to drive somewhere REALLY far. But if they get a good tip, they are the happiest people in the world. We also would talk about whoever we just delivered to, so everybody would know who would tip well and who wouldn't.
I guess in my mind, I felt that if your ordering, you're being kind of lazy instead of coming and getting it yourself. So you should expect to tip. If you don't want to tip but want the food, go get it yourself. We use our own gas and put many miles on our personal vehicle with very little compensation, and we could have been taking someone else their order instead of yours. Plus, I know this may sound a little extreme, I felt like I'm risking my life every time I drove. Or at least risked getting into an accident. That is especially true when we are flying like we have to, to make sure all orders get their destination on time. I also expected even more tip when it was raining. We don't like driving in the rain anymore than you do. And we could get jacked at any time. A few of our drivers got robbed, held at gun point making a delivery.
So now whenever I go anywhere, I give a good tip. I also have that little stereotype in the back of mind as well. I know I shouldn't be tipping like I do being in college. But I can't help it.
I'm going to leave you guys speaking for all the delivery drivers out there. Tip them please. Give them a little more if you know you live farther away. Make sure you tell your children or teenagers that to tip if they are ordering. And please don't send your kids to the door to avoid showing face because you don't want to tip.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Whenever I order a pizza or some sandwich from a place that delivers, the total will usually be around $15-$20. So I'm usually leaving like 2 bucks for the delivery guy. I believe that's fair because it's about 10%, there's usually a delivery charge, and this guy isn't refilling my drink, conversing with me every now and then, or recommending things.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

Its not just gas either. It's the toll that driving takes on the vehicle. Maintenance. Especially considering that most drivers have crappy cars to begin with.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Still not a great idea, the whole idea of tipping is for the type of service they offer. Telling them they have $x tip but if they make a mistake there will be a deduction is pointless imo since they know they're working for a tip. Doing that may just get you ****ty service in the end. Just like Thrasha said, its almost degrading and you waving something over them.
Ok...I can see all of your points.
But the thing is. I feel like waiters are going to look at me and think that I'm not going to tip well. So they are going to give me poor service. Or they are just going to be more attentive to another group who "look" like they'd tip more.
So I was just trying to come up with a way that would show the waiter that I tip just as well, if not even better than most people from the start. That way I get the same amount of service and attention he or she would give to anybody else.
How else could I go about this?Comment

You are a cheap, Kobe lovin' sonofa.......LOL.
I'm with Fisto. I would be embarrased if I sat down and broke bread with you.
EDIT: Then again, we wouldn't have to worry about it, because I know I would be paying.Last edited by ThreeKing; 05-08-2008, 02:18 PM.Comment
