Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
I think that the majority of us would change our outlook on tipping if we worked off tips at one point or another.
I used to deliver pizzas a while back. Might not be the same as working in a restaurant or other job, but getting tipped sure did mean a lot to me and the other drivers. If I got a good tip from somebody, and I saw their name or house come up at a later date, I would do my best to get their order there as fast as possible anytime they ordered.
If I got a bad tip, or nothing at all, next time I don't care so much when they order. There are times when I would have to take 5 or 6 deliveries at once, and guess who I already had planned to get their order last, even if they ordered ahead of everyone else.
It also just upset me and my fellow drivers when we got little if anything at all. They'd come back cussing and calling the person names. Just puts every one in a bad mood. It's even worse if they had to drive somewhere REALLY far. But if they get a good tip, they are the happiest people in the world. We also would talk about whoever we just delivered to, so everybody would know who would tip well and who wouldn't.
I guess in my mind, I felt that if your ordering, you're being kind of lazy instead of coming and getting it yourself. So you should expect to tip. If you don't want to tip but want the food, go get it yourself. We use our own gas and put many miles on our personal vehicle with very little compensation, and we could have been taking someone else their order instead of yours. Plus, I know this may sound a little extreme, I felt like I'm risking my life every time I drove. Or at least risked getting into an accident. That is especially true when we are flying like we have to, to make sure all orders get their destination on time. I also expected even more tip when it was raining. We don't like driving in the rain anymore than you do. And we could get jacked at any time. A few of our drivers got robbed, held at gun point making a delivery.
So now whenever I go anywhere, I give a good tip. I also have that little stereotype in the back of mind as well. I know I shouldn't be tipping like I do being in college. But I can't help it.
I'm going to leave you guys speaking for all the delivery drivers out there. Tip them please. Give them a little more if you know you live farther away. Make sure you tell your children or teenagers that to tip if they are ordering. And please don't send your kids to the door to avoid showing face because you don't want to tip.Comment

It's not just about being cheap and saving money either. If you wanted to save money, you wouldnt go to that restaurant in the first place. Go to Albertsons, HEB, or Costco or something. The characteristic is something more than being a tightwad.Last edited by ZB9; 05-08-2008, 01:37 PM.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
People can cry the blues about the fact that waiters/waitresses make such a small hourly wage rate but I honestly don't feel sorry for them at all. There are people that do that for a living at decent/upscale restaurants that make good money. I know college grads from good schools that do this because the money is that good. Yeah, your check might be $30 for 2 weeks but all that cash you make, which chances are you lie about on your taxes (perfectly fine with me), equates to making more money in the long run.
Thats the reason y you make such a low hourly wage.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
For me, I always tip. I've had several friends who work as waiters or in the food industry so I know some of the backround of these places. Usually whenever my girlfriend and I go out, we are getting very simple things (we just like the simple food, chicken fingers and fries or simple pasta, etc). Whenever it is really busy and somebody takes the effort to get us our stuff always on time and make sure we have enough water and all of that is nice, so I usually tip above the 15% as our bill will most likely come out to 20-25 dollars. I had an interesting situation before though, we were at an Italian restaurant, Bravos a couple weeks back. I was back from OSU for spring break and a friend from my old school worked there (he used to work at another italian restaurant, but I saw him in this one and said hey and we talked a bit, though he was on duty). Our waitress was horrible with getting our stuff to us. It wasn't amazingly busy, and we waited over an hour for our meals (which I understand sometimes the kitchen gets busy), but she went over an hour without refilling our water. My friend saw this and basically did her job for her the rest of the night, but she didn't know about it (she didn't understand how our waters were magically refilled). He came by when he had free time, told us about the desserts, went through the desert menu really detailed. We got excellent service from him. I think our actual waitress realized this after we got our dessert (which he brought) and she tried to be really nice and all that (to improve her tip). I gave her two dollars, and stopped him and gave him 8.
Tipping in the food industry is a really good thing to do in my opinion. In other aspects I sometimes feel bad that the first time I did them, I didn't know you were supposed to pay, some of those valet guys at my prom had to hate me.Comment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
Has anyone tried something like this when going to a restaurant as I've thought about trying something like this:
Tell your waiter from the get go how much you plan on tipping. Like the maximum amount that they could get serving you. So you tell the waiter that you are starting him or her off at six dollars.
Then tell them based on their service and their attitude, that could come down. It won't go up any further. But it will be deducted from with every little thing that you were not particularly fond of during your time in the restaurant.
So say that they don't give you a refill after a long while. Or walk by your table a few times without asking if you needed anything. That would result in a deduction here and there. That way by the end of the night they can pretty much judge by how much you paid them, how well their service was. Not only that, but they will probably give better service knowing how much they could possibly make. If they don't get a lot in the end, they probably won't think of you as a cheapo considering the amount you started them at.
I know that if I knew how much I could get from the start, I would give the very best service I could.
Has anyone tried something like this? What do you guys think about that?Comment

Yes, you can make very good money working at an upscale restaurant.
Whats your point? The discussion is about tipping.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. We’re talking about on the biggest stage, in New York, playing out of position and asked to hit fourth for the New York Yankees. I mean, that’s never been done.” - Sheffield on SheffieldComment

Re: GUYS, What is your Perspective on Tipping
I would personally be offended if I was eating at a restaurant with you and you stiffed the wait staff. You claim to be a poor college kid and not a charity, but you detail a Volvo 5 times a year and tip the staff all the while supporting illegal immigration. I don't get it, I'll leave it at that.Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment
