A big thing to remember is that you are not these young mens father. Be a friend, be a confidant, show them things that they would otherwise not experience. There is going to be a period where he may not want to open up to you and let you in to close early on. Don't get upset just keep working at it. Find out the things that interest him and see if you can't further his enjoyment of those things. I've volunteered in similar programs while in the navy. It is a very rewarding experience. Just remember why you are there and don't forget that no matter what you are making a positive difference in someones life.

I'm torn on this.

Having firsthand knowledge of the program, I know how important it is for these kids to have a positive male role model in their lives and the impact that it can have on them.

But on the other hand, given some of the topics you have created here, I worry about the type of life lessons you'll be teaching this kid.
