I know A Professional Baseball Player
One of the kids that went to my school in '05 has been drafted and signed a contract. Ashton Mowdy got picked in the 19th round by the Astros and is playing A ball right now. It's pretty cool seeing that I know this guy and have hit off him because he was our coach two summers ago during summer ball. Just a cool quick fact that I would state.Tags: None -

Technically he's not a professional if he's in the minors

Re: I know A Professional Baseball Player
Travis Metcalf, who's a third baseman for the Rangers, is a family friend. He's in AAA now, but was up at the Major league level last year, and played in around 50 games.
They stopped getting paid at the minor league level or something?

Re: I know A Professional Baseball Player
I used to feel really bad how one time during BP Mowdy threw his curveball to me and made me look like an complete idiot, but now seeing the recent events that have happened I don't feel as bad now.Comment

Re: I know A Professional Baseball Player
The closest thing to me knowing a baseball player is the fact that Josh Hamilton is a distant cousin of a guy I trade NFL DVDs with.
Oh and I have family with the last name Texiera but not related to Mark so no dice there.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: I know A Professional Baseball Player
Come on, you're supposed to brag about how Mark's a very distant cousin. Don't you know how that kind of thing works?
I've only talked to him a couple times, and that was years ago. Last year he was starting when the Rangers came to KC, but for some reason I didn't go to the games.Comment

My very good friend was drafted out of high school 3rd rd. 3rd pick by the chi sox. He got to AA.
My cousins best friend is Brian Anderson (the pitcher) Played catch with him. now retired.
My old roomate went the school with the LaRoche brothers.
I met Kenny Lofton a number of times. He dated the daughter of a guy my dad worked with. Very nice guy.Comment

Re: I know A Professional Baseball Player
We had a bunch of guys get drafted and sign contracts from my high school. They won State something like 6 times in a row. I don't think any of them ever made it to "The Show" though.- The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good.Comment

Re: I know A Professional Baseball Player
In HS, I played against/with 2 guys I know that went onto play in MLB:
Cory Sullivan (same team) and Matt Clement (opponent)
I pitched against Sullivan a few times during inter-squad games. He was an easy out back then. Just pound him outside and he'd get frustrated - he wasn't able to go the other way back then. Clement played more 1B in HS than pitcher. When he did pitch, he was wild as hell.
There were a few tournaments across the US that I played in where opposing players were drafted, but I don't know if any of them ever made it or not.Comment

Re: I know A Professional Baseball Player
I pitched/played against:
-C.C. Sabathia (1998 Vallejo High) - Walked him on 4 straight pitches the only time I faced him
-Dustin Pedroia (1998 and 1999 Woodland High School and a Summer team out of Reno, NV)-we beat them for sections.
-Connor Jackson (2003 Cal) - I didn't pitch this game, but we beat Cal.
-Johnny Gomez (1999 Casa Grande, 2000 and 2001 Santa Rosa JC). We beat them in 99 in their own Spring Tournament, and in 2001 they knocked us out of the conference playoffs.
-Huck Flenner-Actually before I moved to Texas, he was part of my monthly poker game. He pitched for the Blue Jays for a few years in the 90's before losing his eye when he was struck by a line drive.

-Gary Wilson-Another guy who had a cup of coffee in the majors in the mid-90's. He was my pitching coach in junior college.

-My former college coach is/was brother-in-law to JT Snow (He was married to JT's sister, but they may now be divorced).
While in college and coaching in HS, there were several players that were drafted, though non of them made it or have made it yet.Last edited by Trevytrev11; 06-20-2008, 10:49 AM.Comment
