I used to be great friends with Colin Sabean (Brian's son), so I knew a lot of Giants and got to personally meet every 2001 Giants player.
And my mom's cousin, Jason Blanton, was in Boston's minor league organization for some time, then traded to Chicago. If it weren't for the great rotation at the time (2003 I think) and a serious injury he had (with surgery following), he would have gone pro no doubt. I need to see what he's doing these days.
Oh, and some of my friends have been drafted, too. Just not too high up there. There was this one kid I once got to play with when my godfather's son (does that make him my godbrother?) had a college-aged fall ball team that was short on players and I got to play (I was 14 at the time). The kid that was drafted was the closer. He was drafted by Colorado last year in the first round. I just forget what his name is.
My little sister once had a softball tournament in Clovis, CA... we stayed at the same hotel that I guess this huge track event's teams were staying as well, including Willie McGee's daughter. The guy gave me hitting tips in the freakin' lobby!
Just this past fall, I was playing in my San Diego adult baseball league, and Steve Finley was in the league as well. He pitched, it was awesome! I doubled off him, but he returned the favor by hitting a walk-off double (I wasn't pitching).
But the coolest time was when I was hitting at a public batting cage when someone behind me was watching me and I caught his eye I guess. He said I had a great swing from both sides of the plate and that I should shoot for a D1 school (I was a senior in high school at the time). When I finally turn around to see who it was, Eric Byrnes was standing back there with his arms crossed and that weird look he always has on his face like he's trying to understand what someone just told him. He treated me to dinner that night at a Mexican restaurant across the street (sort of fastfood ish). It was totally awesome. We talked for like an hour that night about nothing in particular, just baseball and life. He was a cool guy.
Oh, and I don't know the guy, but my baseball coach senior year of H.S. was roommates with Juan Pierre in college.
