9 to 5...is there such thing?

I mean, does it really exist? Does anyone have this kind of a job where they always go home at 5pm sharp? And go out for lunch at exactly 12pm or something like that? It seems like science fiction to me...

When I was a directory assistant and worked in the mornings during the summer, my hours were from 9 - 5.

My hours now is 8 - 4:30, so... not much difference.

And is it a full-time job or considered anything else?

        My current job? It's a full-time job.

Nope. Not even in the public sector. I averaged 70 hour workweeks when I was in sports and I average 50 hour workweeks in the public sector.

Not for me. I average between a 50 and 60 hour work week. Although I have the occasional week where I don't have much going on, and I work 40-45.

My day typically starts at 7:00 am, and finishes whenever. Plus I usually put in some time on the weekends.

Going to the beach and surfing doesn't count BK.

As for the 9-5 thing I think it depends. My Dad works 9-5 (really 7-3) every day, never stays late, never goes in early, and never works weekends. He's probably lucky in that boat, but if he does it, I'm sure someone else does.

Me personally, working in the food service industry, I've never come close.

I'm pretty sure the last time the 9 to 5 workday concept for most people ended in the early '80s. We're too driven now by maximizing productivity and then you add in the fact that everybody wants to be convenienced then those in certain industries are going to be working far longer hours.

My mother usually works from 7-2 as a rural mail carrier.

As a college student, I go to class sporadically through the day. Although for 5 weeks, I get to go to class from 8-4 every day! Yay!

It exists. Its usually the lower to mid level employees at large companies.

Yeah, I don't know how they do it. My day starts at 8AM with a call to India, then into the office by 10AM, I leave around 7PM and then work 1-2 hours from the hotel.

Well, I usually work 50-60 hours a week. So we can now officially pronounce that there's no such thing as 9 to 5. RIP...

I guess the next question will be: Are you willing to give up XX% of you salary (I'm not talking about 50%, of course) for working 9-5 without exceptions?

That's what my Dad did. He gave up about 15k a year to work 40 hours a week, instead of the 70-80 he was working. And he's a much happier person because of it.
