    Post Counts

A lot of guys will probably tell you they don't even pay attention to them, but let's be honest: they're something we all notice, at least in passing. The content of a post is always #1, but there is a difference, often a not-so-subtle one, between a guy with 12 posts and a guy with 15,000.

I've noticed that at a couple other boards, they've done away with the practice of publishing them. NCAA Strategies is one board that comes to mind that doesn't show them, and the PS3 forums, it seems, have just ditched them.

I'm wondering what everyone thinks about post counts more generally, and also: what are the chances OS would ever stop showing them? Do you think it would be a good idea? Why or why not?

    Re: Post Counts

I don't think they cause a problem here at OS. Every now or so we'll get a guy that tries to top 50 posts per day and become a moderator. But that is rare. I don't think it would matter if they stayed or went.

In one of the Nissan/Infiniti forums we don't have a post count but a Rep count meaning how many times someone gave you + rep for helping them out. Reason we have that there is because of a lot of people give out information and that can indicate if someone knows what they are talking about. They also have a little XP bar below their name. Here I don't think is needed though.

See, I kinda like them. This is the highest my post count has ever been on any board - even though I've been posting at different places for like six or seven years now. I'd hate to see it vanish, I'm kind of proud of it!

            Re: Post Counts

I wouldn't like to see the post count disappear, but the rep system would be nice to have.

Let's face it, some people here with a lot of posts are ***es and don't contribute to whatever the discussion is. But they get that inherent respect that comes with a lot of posts.

On the other hand there are some with a lower post count that always help out a poster and really have good info or insight about the topic. A rep system would help people more easily "show them love".

I don't care about them. Everybody knows who I am so it's not a big deal to me but I'm sure to some people they're like gold. On some other boards I visit they either don't have post counts or you can only see them if you look at the person's profile.

I can see where someone looks at the post count and takes that as the determining factor as to whether you know what you are talking about. I dont think it matters. The only time we have the 4 post wonders on here is release time for the big games, outside of that, its pretty calm here.

My post count isn't anywhere near as high as it is on here on any of the other websites that I go to.

I like the idea of milestones and reaching them (5,000, 10,000, 20,000...), but unless I'm the lead poster, I honestly don't care about how high my post count is.

I dont really pay attention. In terms of the "rep" system, Im glad we dont have it. Run over to DSM sometime and see the guys complaining back and forth about how one guy gave that guy a neg rep so that guy did it back and so on and so forth. I like the system the way it is and if the post count vanished I couldnt care less as long as the meat and potatos of the website stayed the same.

I think the board leader is BK. He has more posts than all the posters combined in this thread.

                              Re: Post Counts

OS has a relatively unique system with the avatars of showing who is moderately credible. Obviously there are exceptions, as LB is probably considered a bit more credible than Kash or I, but it still holds up moderately well.

If we are getting rid of it, I'd at least like to see a pre-100 post count.

I mean, if someone just posts "Michigan St is winning the championship" with 3 posts, it's a lot easier to ignore than someone doing it with 2,010 posts.
