It's a combination of that and there's just more people alive.

The media is huge now. If the Christmas tsunami or the Iran earthquake happened in 1965, they would have been 200 word spots on the back pages of newspapers.

Katrina wasn't this superpower of a storm. Katrina hitting New Orleans was more like a fluke punch killing someone than a gunshot killing someone.

Exactly. That's just the actual media. Everyone carries either a video camera or a regular camera at all times too.

I'm sure if more people could move away they would. But unfortunately, they might wanna stay because of friends and family, or the ambiance of New Orleans and it's music and food, or to be able to go to a Hornets game and watch Chris Paul throw alley hoops to Tyson Chandler. Or go to a Saints game. Or because moving they're dying mother to another city would be too much stress mentally, physically, and financially. Or I don't know, maybe he/she is a police officer that wants to lend a hand in getting rid of the needless violence that cripples our streets instead of just running away to another city.

Now don't get me wrong, I understand the point of your post but as a native New Orleanian I just feel that some people have this mindset of "why would people even live there blah blah blah." It's more to it than being in the path of a hurricane. If that's the case, how about I go live in beautiful Miami. Oh wait, Florida sticks out like a sore thumb just as much as Louisiana and is a hot-spot for hurricanes. I remember Andrew from the 90's and Miami was a mess and it can happen there again. Or how about I go stay in Atlanta...oh wait, weren't they having some issues with lack of water? Or how about Cali and it's earthquakes and wildfires. Like someone said earlier, natural disasters can happen anywhere you live. Do you suggest everyone leave New Orleans for good? I guess one of the biggest shipping ports would have to relocate somewhere else huh?

P.S. Anyone find it really strange that as time passes, more and more natural disasters are occuring around the globe. Now i'm not a super-religious person and I also know OS's stance on politics and religion, but man it just seems weird how things are happening with the weather these days. I'm just saying....
I dont really care if or why someone lives there, but anyone there knows the risks and for whatever reason chooses to stay. lol at putting music and hornets basketball on the same level as a dying mother though, really adds to the credibility. There's plenty of places to live that aren't below sealevel in a hurricane zone.

I wasn't trying to say those circumstances are on the same level. My point was that there are several reasons why people don't just get up and leave a city just cause it's below sea level. It could be for sports reasons (since sports are huge in Louisiana), or for personal obligations.

Again I dont care what reasons they are, just dont come whining and asking for help and sympathy when what everyone can forsee happening happens (especially if your reason is a mediocre professional football team and basketball team with such a passionate following they finished fifth from last in attendance).

Some of my cousins are on their way up here now, getting out of Mobile. They did the same during Katrina.

Mobile is actually out of the projected path right now. Not that that means a whole lot with how unpredictable hurricanes are.

Maximum winds are 150 MPH and pressure down to 930mb, wow! That is one monster of a storm. My concern is tornadoes in the northwest quadrant of the storm. Storm surge could be as high as 15 to 20 feet above normal on the coast IF it makes landfall as a category 4 hurricane!! This is a very dangerous situation.

It is going to take weeks to clean up the mess left behind.

Strong storm indeed. It should weaken a bit before landfall and I still expect a cat 3 at landfall due to the colder temps in the northern gulf but that is plenty strong to cause significant problems and the storm surge will likely be extremely severe.

New Orleans has been hit 21 times by a tropical system since 1900 I believe. Hurricanes hitting there is nothing new; we should not be spending millions of dollars rebuilding BELOW sea level in a flood-prone area, it's ludicrous!

That's really close to where my grandparents live. I am sure they are leaving at least by tomorrow to go to my aunts house in Greenville. I will have to talk to them tomorrow though. This is scary stuff.

Y'know there was talk after Katrina of just abandoning New Orleans altogether and moving the entire population up north a bit. It'd still be called New Orleans but it certainly wouldn't be the exact same geographic area.

I wonder if Gustav causes damage on a par with Katrina if that kind of talk will come up again.

I've heard that gas prices could go up in excess of $5 a gallon if the hurricane stays on track since it is projected to go right over all the off-shore oil wells off of Louisiana.

That reminds me, I need to go fill my gas tank up in case gas prices do shoot up.
