New Orleans may get another surge

There is risk that Hurricane Gustav could may make land fall near New Orleans, although the exact path is not certain at this time. It could strike any place from Houston to the Florida panhandle and will likely cause severe damage especially near the coast. If it should land south or slightly to the west of New Orleans, the levee system my be tested again. Of course the levee is much improved now compared to its condition in 2005 before Hurricane Katrina and should hold. If not, well there will be hell to pay. Property insurance on the gulf coast will probably become more expensive. It is so expensive now for real estate on the coast that we decided only to partially insure our property south of New Orleans . It may be in danger of tremendous surge and damage.

Eventhough Miami, Florida is high risk for hurricanes, I still plan to buy property there. Now is a good time to buy.

I'd much rather have it hit Pensacola than New Orleans.

The storm surge that accompanys major hurricanes is tremendously powerful and can move buildings, cars, bridges, and other large heavy object . If you ever see it live on the ground, it will put terror in your heart. It is not the wind that kills, it is that huge wall of water that comes fast and furious and if you are in its pathway, it will swallow you.

Maybe their mayor will actually do something this time.

Why people live below sea level in a hurricane zone is beyond me.

And I find it utterly remarkable that people are afraid of earthquakes. You guys deal with this stuff every few years while us Californians wait for decades sometimes to get our butts kicked by Mother Nature.

I'd still rather know what's about to come and when it's coming rather than being completely up in the air about it all.

He did do something....too late though (stupid fool)

Anyways I sure as hell hope this doesn't affect the people of New Orleans again. They just might feel like they're cursed or something if Gustav causes huge devastation.

Just depends on what you're used to.

Bad thunderstorms and tornadoes don't bother me one bit, but when I was out in the bay area at the start of the year, the people out there were freaking out over the weather they had.

I just can't imagine this hurricane staying on a straight path and not veering east OR west. I bet it goes further east hitting the Alabama coast.

The weather people are not really sure where it will make land fall. It is way too early to predict the exact location now. It is wise to be prepared though.

the city has had many storms, and the levies have held every time except for one. Hopefully, the city used the federal money to maintain and improve the levies this time....instead of putting much of that money into their pockets.

but I really hope that storm fizzles out and doesnt end up as strong of a storm as some people are speculating.

This is the reason the Wife and I left Louisiana, after Katina hit, we decided we liked tornadoe's and blizzard's better. As far as the money being spent in the proper way by the local government..........................sure.
