I know it's ridiculous to be living in a place below sea level but these people have been living there all their lives. And most can't really afford to get out anyway. I went there on vacation and most of my family down there lives in the backwoods on farms somewhere. They don't have the cash to leave. And the city of new orleans itself isn't much better than the Projects in places as far as financial situations. They can't leave even if they want to. My biggest thing is if you abandon that place what do you do with the people already there?

You're exactly right. A lot people just don't have the financial means to up and move from there.

To get on topic.... the storm could hit by sunrise, withing a few hours in the least....

at a cat 3 I believe, does anything think there is a chance they will be just fine at this rate?

I can do nothing but respect how you feel. I somehow feel that way I was born and raised there for 25 years and after Katrina I refused to move back there, but never questioned anyone elses reason to do so.

Yep, I'm surprised more people didn't do what you and Jackdog's family did and instead put themselves right back in the same situation.

At a Cat 3 the levees SHOULD hold out. If it can't then there's definitely something wrong.

There will be flooding, that's a given.

The key is to not have the levees fail, and the problem is that the west levees are considered somewhat unstable and vulnerable.

All you can do is hope nothing bad happens.

Flooding should be a given. It would be hilarious (well not really) if there was some moderate flooding and the people down there blame the levees on it. The levees aren't there to be 100% protection from everything.

Seriously, some people will probably overreact to some of the flooding, if the levees don't fail.

If they do...well, let's just hope that doesn't happen.

I'm pretty confident things are going to turn out alright in NOLA. The storm seems to be moving further and further west.

the oil rigs in the gulf should be ok if it's a cat 3. They can hold up to a lot

but cat 3s often turn into cat 4s or 5s once they approach landfall if all the conditions are perfect...have no idea in this case. Sometimes they fizzle out or dissipate quickly once they approach shore if they are going too fast (and the water is too cold) or if winds are too strong.
