I'm pretty confident things are going to turn out alright in NOLA. The storm seems to be moving further and further west.

Remember though, the most dangerous part of a hurricane in terms of storm surge is the eastern portion.

From the most recent National Hurricane Center statement:

"AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS STORM SURGE OF 10 TO 14 FEET ABOVE NORMAL
TIDAL LEVELS IS EXPECTED NEAR AND TO THE EAST OF WHERE THE CENTER
OF GUSTAV CROSSES THE COAST."

I realize that but NOLA is actually out of the projection cone at this point so the storm surge shouldn't be as bad as it could have been. Another update will be out here in 5-10 minutes so we'll see how that looks.

Uhh... don't hurricanes lose strength as they make landfall?

yea once they hit landfall, i meant approaching landfall. Worst ones are cat 3s that turn into 4s as they are approaching

if they are too fast when they are far out, they usually dissipate

I believe that is correct. The water near inland is warmer I believe, which helps the hurricane to build strength.

Man, they are showing video of an Army soldier who jumped into the water to go hook a fuel tank and tow to the boat so it didn't hit the levee and explode or knock a hole in it.
