I would like to think of myself as a fairly intelligent person and I swear. I know not to swear in court obviously, but other than that what is the big deal? What is the basis for a mere word to be offensive? I'd love to have someone explain the history of this.

What's your belief on swearing?
I am just curious what other OSers think about this. To me the whole concept is absurd, certain words are deemed inappropriate for what reason? Why do people get so uptight about words (not counting racial slurs or the like)? I mean if you here the f-word, what is the big deal.

Re: What's your belief on swearing?
It's funny, it's really become a part of our jargon....but if I hear a kid say it....it just sounds so wrong.
So I still try and keep from cursing in front of them.
But the MF bombs are usually flying from me.

Re: What's your belief on swearing?
Well a lot of people being offended it has to do with what the words started as and what they mean today. Most of the words that we consider swears today had perfectly fine meanings before but now we use them as different, more unacceptable meanings just for no real reason whatsoever. I really don't have a stance on it but that's just what I've observed. My latest project - Madden 12 http://www.operationsports.com/forum...post2043231648Comment

I curse all the time. I do try to watch what I say around children, however.Originally posted by EWRMETSMaybe the best post in OS's history. If you don't think Tony Romo is a Hall of Famer, you support al Qaeda.Comment

Re: What's your belief on swearing?
I don't curse much really. I don't mind other people cursing, but I can't stand when someone drops the F-bomb in every other sentence, though. That drives me insane!
Pretty much, it's an established rule of society that certain words are deemed bad. Technically, if you were to go by the Bible, swearing "*** ****" would be much worse than saying "F*** you!". But we in society today deem the "F*** you!" to be worse, when a thousand years ago "*** ****" would never be said as it is using God's name in vain.
Why is the F word deemed to be a bad word? I have no idea and I don't know if there really is a reason. It just is what it is I guess.Last edited by superjames1992; 10-26-2008, 08:02 PM.Comment

Re: What's your belief on swearing?
I'm a regular cursing machine, although I have cut down on it. But on Sundays when the Packers play, I'm pretty much Jon Gruden as the F-Bombs will come flying out my mouth like crazy.#RespectTheCultureComment

Ya that bugs me the most as well. Especially when a family is around, if its just us guys playing NCAA or something then I'm fine with itAaron

I'm a low to moderate curser.
I don't yell them out or anything but rather use them as adjectives.Comment

It's just a matter of class. You need to know how to control yourself.
That said, I cuss a lot, more than I should. Probably because of my temper and sarcastic nature.
The real art of language is learning how to convey your anger and frustration WITHOUT cussing. I haven't done that yet.Comment

I think part of the f word being bad is because it's not used the right way. Traditionally it would be used to mean to have sex with. Now people don't use it that way which causes it to be deemed offensive. Same thing with almost every other swearLast edited by RAZRr1275; 10-26-2008, 08:49 PM.My latest project - Madden 12 http://www.operationsports.com/forum...post2043231648Comment
