A reporter for ABC33/40 drove through some of the Tuscaloosa damage, saying that several "buildings were missing" and that some streets were "unrecognizable".
The same tornadic cell moved northeast and, less than an hour later, blasted a similar path through the west and north sides of Alabama's largest city, Birmingham.
Tuscaloosa's mayor Walter Maddox called the situation "catastrophic" and says parts of the city have been "obliterated".
