Re: Books and reading
Anyone who hasn't read it is doing themselves a disservice. Bar none the best book I've ever read, and most people who've read it agree.
As a self proclaimed history junkie, there's no reason for you not having read it. Once you get past the "WHOMG THERE'S A LOT OF PAGES" it's a fantastic book.
I wasn't too impressed with War and Peace, kinda dissapointed. I would definitely recommend "Life and Fate" by Vasily Grossman as an alternative. One of the best books i've ever read.Comment

Re: Books and reading
Currently reading Karl Jaspers' Nietzsche, which is technically a supplemental to Nietzsche's philosophy, but one that is written by a legitimate philosopher in his own right (Jaspers) opposed to a mere scholar. Before this was Why We Read What We Read by Lisa Adams and John Heath, which catalogs and analyzes the best-selling books of recent times and draws parallels between them. Fascinating. Also working on Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion for a religious studies course.I am become death

Re: Books and reading
Just to point out - forums count as reading. Novels and books aren't the only reading to be done; games, magazines, forums, websites, and things like that all count.
You've got over 5000 posts, and I'm going to guess you've read more than you've posted.
So I wouldn't say you hate reading; this sort of reading counts just as much as reading any novel does.
Forums are like conversation, not reading.
Very different things.
I also wouldn't agree that someone who reads magazines instead of novels is actually reading in the sense we're describing here or even in the sense that JJ meant."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: Books and reading
I'm interested, but I have to make sure I finish a few books. It seems like a totally different genre than the one I prefer."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: Books and reading
American Gods isn't quite as good as Neverwhere, but its a really good book with a plot twist and a lot of deep characters. Ive never read Anansi Boys, which is related to American Gods, but I have heard it is good too.Teams I Live and Die with:

Re: Books and reading
I used to try to get into reading but I could never decide what to read. The endless stacks of books is really a scary thing, especially when you have no idea what you're looking for.
The only time I ever really read was like back in 5th or 6th grade when I read through the entire Redwall series.
Last book I read was in my senior year of high school, A Clockwork Orange. I'm probably not one to judge books since I haven't read hardly any but I thought it was a great book.Fan of....
Memphis Tigers - Texas Rangers - Dallas Mavericks - Dallas Cowboys
Coaching Career of Chris Matthews (CH2k8)
The Legend of Ocho Ocho
