    Car Crashes...

Have you OSers had to endure them? They are awful.

Got in to one on my way to school yesterday. I'm 17. I was going about 45 doing a regular two way one lane highway and there is another road that meets the road im on and makes a T. Anywho the lady was waiting to turn left as other cars going the same direction as me were continuing southbound. I guess she saw the other cars and not me as she started to turn left thus crossing my lane. I slammed the brakes and whipped my wheel to the right.

Smashed in to her 2008 Civic with my front left side, glanced off, in to ditch and came to a halt right before I hit the light pole. I'm fine health wise and so is she. My car is totaled.

I wasn't at fault thank god, would be awful if I was.

So what are your stories OS?

      Re: Car Crashes...

Glad to hear you are ok..

I was in one about 10 years ago or so.. driving my "prized" 1996 Pontiac Grand Am (had to get one :wink, I was on my way home from work. I was passing slower traffic on the right side of me and indicated to go to the right (to get off on an exit ramp). However, the lady in front of me did a dead stop in her minivan for unknown reasons - as there wasn't much traffic in front of her at the time - and presto - went right into the van. Just ended up bending her muffler, but I wrecked the front of my car. I managed to drive home - but the auto body guy said I was lucky that my car went under her's - or I would have been killed by the air bag (since I sat so close).

I have had other "dumber" accidents - mainly "incidents" - but nothing in the past 7 years or so.

Again, glad to hear that you are ok - that is the main thing...

Yeah, because that would have helped him in his situation. It not being his fault and all.

Damn, man, good to see you (and the other lady) made it out of that alright.

I was in a car accident last year, right after Thanksgiving. My car hit some black ice and I spun around and hit the guardrail. Needless to say, my car got messed up. It tore the front end completely off, leaving only the frame. Luckily, we got the car fixed.

I can't wait until I can get home and drive that car (Pontiac Grand AM GT), it's a ton of fun to drive.

You have to drive on the defensive side. Always watching out for idiots. I have been in some close calls, but I am always watching.

Same here... had some close calls especially one last month.

I was driving westbound on the interstate in the center of a three lane road, and a black SUV was a probably 3-4 car lengths ahead of me on the lane to my right. At the time we were leading a pack of cars...

Suddenly a shot of lake-effect snow. Since we were going westward into the weather, the amount of snow on the ground ramped up pretty quickly... within seconds an inch or two of unpaved snow was on the pavement and everyone was still going 70 mph.
For whatever reason I saw that the SUV in front of me hit the brakes... Since I saw the red, I insticntively eased up on my pedal... All of a sudden, the SUV slipped over a bit to the right shoulder and due to oversteering it started to do a counterclockwise spinout towards MY center lane... The SIDE of the SUV missed clipping my front bumper by INCHES and continued to slide through the left lane... I looked in my rear view mirror and saw that the SUV was completely on the left shoulder, facing the wrong way and stopped just a few feet from hitting the concerete median.

I have to say that if I didn't ease up on the gas on instinct, I would have been dragged into the median with him/her and who knows any other car.

So tip of the day, do NOT slam on the brakes during a snowstorm. That should be common sense for the folks in the northern states.

                      Re: Car Crashes...

                      Been in 3 car crashes.

                      1. Sr. in high school and I was being reckless. Went around a bend at 75MPH and lost control of the car. The car got airborn, did a 360 and slammed into a tree. The tree hit the engine on the drivers side so if it was a few feet back, it would have killed me. The car was totaled

                      2. 2 years later a 16 year old wasn't paying attention and slammed into the back of my car. He didn't realize the light turned red. I saw he wasn't slowing down behind me, but had no where to go. The rear of the car was a mess, but was repairable.

                      3. First year working after college and I had bought a new Nissan Maxima. I had it for a few months and the car had approximately 3000 miles on it. A lady ran a stop sign and T-boned my brand new car. I got out with a few cuts and bruises (windows shattered and the passenger side mirror flew across the car and hit my arm), but the car took the worst of it. $16,0000 worth of damage. The car wasn't totaled. It took 3 months to get it back from the body shop and it never ran the same.

Only the 1st was my fault, but I've also learned to be much more defensive behind the wheel. I look out for idiots on the road and try to avoid people that don't seem to be paying much attention.

                        Re: Car Crashes...

I've never been in a crash...though I did "lightly" touch a chick's bumper this past February in Springfield when she did a 360 on ice right in front of me. Thankfully there was no damage, though I was late picking up my son.

I hate crashes though, having witnessed two horrific collisions resulting in 10 fatalaties, over the span of 24 hours, in my job fresh out of college. I can't even enjoy "fun" games like Burnout because of the horrible things I saw then.

The sad thing is that all too often these things are easily preventable by obeying posted signs, adjusting driving habits under special conditions (weather and road construction), not driving impaired, being fully awake and aware, and having a car in good mechanical shape.

Been in 2...one was my fault...the other I was hit while stopped at a light.

                            Tips of the Day

1.) Wear your seat belt...I'm absolutely amazed at the number of people who don't. If I could show you some of the things I've seen you would wear it just backing out of your driveway.

2.) Don't drive like an ***. There was a guy on the freeway the other day who rode my tail during rush hour for about a mile. He then passed me and proceeded to make 14 lane changes (I counted) as he tried to slalom through traffic ahead of me. Long story short I stayed in my lane at my speed and ended up catching back up to him about 5 minutes later when he hit a traffic jam.

The amount of time you save speeding, running lights, and driving like it's a race is minimal and not worth it...all the more so if you get in an accident or get a ticket.
                            - The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good.

No accidents for me yet, but I have a bad habit of doing donuts/slamming on the brakes while driving down empty and icy streets like I did last night. Too much fun to pass up I guess.
