Forgot to add communicator to my list as well.

I'm not a big trash talker(or at least the type of person to start it off)but let's just say I make KG sound like an 8 year old lol.

One more thing...nothing and I mean ABSOLUTELY NOTHING is better than having your team down by like 6+ pts going to 21 and having your team come back and win. One of the best feelings in the world when playing ball.

Man do I know what that's like. Try being 6'6" and in the 170-180 lbs range. Most the people that I play with that are anywhere close to my height like in your situation have a good 30 lbs on me. I can blow by them on offense, but if they're actually good and know what they're doing in the post they can tear me up.

It's even better when the other team has been talking a lot of ****. Probably the best feeling I get when playing ball.

        Great stuff here.

Defense: Watch everyone closely, and pick up their strengths and weaknesses. Most people in the park aren't Kobe, so you don't have to worry about them having more than two skills. If it's a shooter, play him tight. If it's a slasher, back off and force him to his weak hand. If he's skinny, body him up. If he's big, make him chase you on the offensive side of the ball by constantly moving.

Offense: Work on shooting! It's the only way to score, lmao. A great shooter makes everyone's life easier. I was an above average shooter when I was younger, but I quit to learn guitar and boy do I regret never getting my shot back up to par. Ironically, I've matured into a NYC ball handle, so if I had my shot back I'd be a beast, lmao.

Conditioning is also key. If you can keep moving on offense, you'll get easy buckets and open shots because defense tends not to be organized, and really has to compensate for a motion offense. If people are playing man to man, set picks every single chance you get, and always take your pick.

I hate when people wave off picks.

I don't agree with that at all, especially if you're playing a defense who knows what they're doing. Not bragging but 99% of the time I'm the best player where I play pick up and if some scrub teammate comes to set an on-ball screen for me the D will jump the screen and double team me. I can always see over the double team since I'm 6'8 but do I really want to beam a laser at this chump with two left hands? Hell, half the time the guy setting the pick won't even know how to roll or pop so he won't be looking for a pass anyway.

Another thing regarding the pick and roll:

If you can't defend it properly like learning when to switch and when not to, then you will get killed by it all game.

And when you got teammates who have good help defenders, it's makes your job a little bit easier.

This is definitely a great post and everybody is posting alot of real good tips in here.

If you're special compared to the people you play with, you can throw away a whole bunch of things in this thread. For most people though, the pick and roll creates open shots and easy looks in the paint.

Also, when the better player SETS the pick, it can create havoc, because the defense has to respect the ball, which can open things up for you as well.

This kills me...laziness on switching pisses me off like none other.

Wide open shots all the damn time! There's always that one guy on my team who can't play D.

Marino, I'm sorry man. It's clear what happened tonight...the race card was played (there are very few white guys up there...that's just how it goes). Marino is 6-3 white guy who is lanky. He's a glue guy IMO. He'll play defense, hustle, pass the ball, and make open shots. The problem is he's almost too tall to match up against other people because he doesn't have enough weight on his frame.

He was matched up against me and it just wasn't fair. Not trying to be arrogant, but I had probably 40 lbs on him and we're the same height. He did score on me that bastard! He hustled on an offensive board and put it back. You got me!
*If this is inaccurate by any stretch come in here and correct me*

Next time if you go up there I'll do my best to get you on my team man.

Since it's human nature to talk about ourselves!

                      Can:
Stick with almost anyone on defense. I'll guard little guys who are pretty quick...and can body up guys who are a couple inches taller than me. If the little guy is too quick or the big is too strong down low I try my best to hold my own.
Shoot from anywhere. I have a quick release and I am not hesitant to shoot.
Anticipate. On defense I'll usually get steals when I jump passes.
Haha that's about all! But hey shooters are really important, especially when you play 1's & 2's.
I can run for days. I sweat a lot and might look tired but I'll run up and down the floor all day and not slow down...too much...
                      COMMUNICATOR...TALK IT UP FELLAS!
*Shooter who hustles on D and pretty athletic/strong.

                      Can't:
Dribble. I am not going to juke anybody out. Sometimes I try and look stupid and/or lose the ball.
Dunk consistently...YET! I'm gonna work on this...
Block shots. I don't know what happened to me. I've lost my ability here. I used to be a shot blocker. It kills me that I've lost this recently...I need to get it back!
Need to be better getting open. I get open often but I need to be more aggressive.
I know what I need to do. I just want to make sure that I can play defense, make the shots I am suppose to and get rebounds. You have to admit though that at least I tried to guard you, I wasn't going to back down. It was fun though, just pissed on how I was screwed out of playing again.

I'll hand you that, you did put forth good effort. It was just a size mismatch, basically your team just had the disadvantage.

And yes, you got royally screwed man. I'm sorry man.

Okay well I had the next game and everyone knew that. I picked out the team. So we get too it and the people I picked up I guess picked up others. Now let me say I was already waiting for about an hour. So I get on the court and we have about 2 guys 2 many. Me and this one black dude played on the same team and waited the same amount of time. Well then the people on MY team are telling me I would have to wait another game. Then they tried to get in my face about as I resisted. So I was just like **** it I will just leave then. Just some straight up bull****.

I see, that's pretty lame. I'm guessing there was just one court then? I usually go to a local school where people meet up that has 3 "mini-courts" that are probably not quite 3/4 of the length of a real court that we play full court games on to avoid that problem.

Being white can be a problem sometimes trying to play ball. Especially if it's your first time going somewhere and don't really know anyone there. Sucks, but that's how it is.
