Re: Are you completely comfortable with flying?

Flying doesn't bother me one bit. In fact, I kind of enjoy the turbulence and seeing the other passengers nervous looks.

Planes are built to withstand an insance amount of turbulence and I'm pretty sure I read that a human would be passed out by the time a plane was pulling enough G's to rip the wings off.

I've been through an emergency landing at LAX and in Kuwait and enough choppy helicopter rides to not even care anymore about anything out of the ordinary popping up while flying.

No fears here. Our team even had an encounter where we had fire trucks and ambulances waiting at the airport because our wheels wouldn't come out or something like that. There were news cameras already at the airport as well.

To the person saying "If I have engine trouble..."

Well...I don't know how many drunk air plane pilots crashing into your plane are going to happen.

I don't mind flying, and I'd much rather fly than drive for a long period of time, but I'm not 100% comfortable. There are moments where I will be like "oh ****" when there's like a sudden small drop because of turbulence, but other than that I'm fine.

you need to watch the news more often then, as there have been reports of drunk pilots operating planes. And I agree, the chances of another plane hitting you in the air is quite minimal to another car hitting you, but on the other hand, a drunk driver isn't flying his car thousands of feet off the ground either is he?

Ok then...so all of these drunk pilots would probably kill people then...well the numbers don't back that up sir.

Which type of flying is safer?

Type of Flight Fatalities per 100,000 flight hours
Airliner (Scheduled and nonscheduled Part 121) 0.089
Commuter Airline (Scheduled Part 135) 0.670
Commuter Plane (Nonscheduled Part 135 - Air taxi on demand) 1.230
General Aviation (Private Part 91) 2.305

Odds of being involved in a fatal accident

Odds of being on an airline flight which results in at least one fatality Odds of being killed on a single airline flight
Top 25 airlines with the best records | 1 in 6.06 million
Top 25 airlines with the best records |1 in 10.46 million
Bottom 25 with the worst records | 1 in 546,011
Bottom 25 with the worst records | 1 in 723,819

Driving stats aren't shown because it's apples to oranges.

If these odds aren't reassuring though I don't know what is.

I don't care what the stats say, I have my personal opinion/feeling on flying. I didn't know there was a right or wrong answer when providing your opinion on a subject.

Its nice to see that you're going out of your way though to try and prove my opinion wrong though. Its awful thoughtful of you.

You decided to be "cute" and make a mockery of my opinion talking about a plane's engine troubles vs a car's engine troubles and brought up something about drunk drivers. I mentioned how there have been reports of drunk pilots and now you go out of your way to disprove my opinion. I don't know what the hell you are expecting me to say or what your point is to all of this.

I'm comfortable with the idea of flying.

I'm never comfortable when I fly. I always get sick and those chairs are way too small. It takes me a full day or two to recuperate.

But I have no problem safety-wise or anything while flying.

I absolutely HATE flying, and I still have a slight phobia of flying. The thing is I fly at least once a year back home to Indonesia and it's a 24 hr flight. Before I got married, my phobia was pretty intense, it's still bad now but with the wife next to me it's better.

I tell her, this is God's way of cleansing my yearly sins. After I finish up grad school here in 6 months, my job will be sending me out to places a lot, so I need to get over this phobia soon. It has gotten a lot better though, like 6-7 years ago, I remember a slight and I mean a VERY slight shake, movement, dip and I just freaked out.

It got so bad, I could never get through a movie on a plane, every 10 mins i'd pause the film to calm myself down. It was bad......so a year and a half ago on our way back to Indonesia, I finished 2 movies in the plane. It was a huge achievement for me LOL....I was like a kid who just hit his first little league HR.....made sure everyone in my family knew since they all know how much of a chicken I am in the air.

I usually fly Singapore Airlines back to Indo, very nice service and planes. But when we fly over Afghanistan/Pakistan/India.....the turbulence is pretty heavy....I hate that area.

I'm good with take off/landing....turbulence is what gets me!

No. I always get nervous going to the airport, and I always feel a little sick when there's turbulence.

I've flown probably 100+ times in my life; but it's not something I'll even get used to. I avoid flying as much as possible.

Although, it's a completely irrational fear. It's pretty much the safer than any other form of travel.

I have never flown. Chances are with my job, however, that I'll have to someday...

I'm fairly comfortable flying. Turbulence doesn't bug me at all. I am more nervous before a flight than when I'm actually in the air.
