Are you completely comfortable with flying?

Just wondering.

I have my issues with flying, especially after having to make an emergency landing because of a blown something or other. Going down, in the rain, with the lights flashing on and off, the smell of smoke filling up the cabin... is just NOT COOL.

So, are you completely at ease when you fly?

I am actually more comfortable flying across the country than driving. I've flown so many times, that it doesn't even faze me.

Now I have a friend that won't even come within 10 miles of an airport due to his fears.

I don't have issues, though three flights back we had our first "oh ****" scare. We were on final approach into MSP and all of a sudden the pilot accelerated and took us up at a fairly steep angle. Turns out, another plane was tracking in front of us and the air traffic controllers didn't notice it...scared the piss out of my wife and I, thinking that we were going to die (my son only noticed that we both hugged him really hard).

I dont mind it at all. My job as an auditor for a brokerage firm used to require me to fly sometimes 3 times a week. I can sleep, or get stuff done while travelling somewhere. No worries here.

Plus my dad has always travelled alot, so it doesnt bother me.

I don't think you can have a bigger fear!

I've always been completely comfortable with flying up until my last flight. Maybe I'll post the story someday.

Let's just say I'll never be flying a certain airline ever again. Seems like it's a common thing for them.

What airlines have your flown where you have had "scares?" I think that is something good to know.

I have never, EVER had a problem with JetBlue. I love that airline. If I had any complaint it would be the lack of space per chair... but the actual flights have always been fantastic for me.

I'm fine with it. I used to get nervous during takeoffs and waiting to board the plane, but I've flown a lot more in recent years and it doesn't bother me. I think what got me used to it was all the connecting flights and basically having to get used to takeoffs.

Now, if the plane starts experiencing very bad turbulence, then I'll start getting a bit nervous. I took a trip to Portland, OR for business a year or so ago and at one point we hit an air pocket. That was the worst feeling in my life. The plane felt like it dropped straight down a few hundred feet and lasting about 10 seconds before regaining control. It's the only time I've heard people literally screaming in the plane. The guy next to me looked over and said "I fly on a near weekly basis so I've seen a lot. I really thought we were going down there".

My scare was on Frontier, but that's the only time I've had a problem with them (and we've flown on that airline a LOT over the past four years).

I will fly and have to from time to time for my job, but I'd prefer not to. I know everyone says that you're more likely to be injured in a car crash than a plane crash, but here's my thing. If my car has engine trouble, I pull over to the side of the road. If the plane I'm on has engine trouble, there's no place to pull over and only one place to go.....down.

I'm pretty much the same. ... there was one flight where the plane hit turbulence pretty hard. A few rows down I saw another passenger with a full cup of beer. It was almost as if the beer was suspended in mid air while the cup in his hand went downward for a second... spilled it all over himself.

Not a fan of the crying or uncontrollable kids, though.

I like flying. I'm not 100% confortable though. Takeoffs are fun and I enjoy looking down so as long as nothing happens to the plane and we don't hit turbulence I'm cool.

I love flying- I sleep for most of the flight.

I'm not nervous when driving but I can absolutely believe that its statistically more dangerous driving than flying. Too many morons on the roads

Flying is statistically 17 times safer than driving, so, yes, I feel quite safe. The only issue is that when you crash while flying, you're almost always killed whereas when you drive, that's not particularly the case.

Still, just think how many thousands of people die in car wrecks each year. Between 1998 and 2007, an average of 36 plane crashes occurred in the United States per year with a vast majority of those being personal planes with just a few people and not airliners with hundreds of people.

Now, if you're going overseas, then watch out. The US has the best commercial airline system in the world, but if you go fly on Iran Air or something, you're looking for trouble. You hear about foreign planes crashing all the time.

I fly to different parts of North America about two times a week. I was extremely scared at first, but now, I close my eyes, put some headphones on and drift away. God forbid anything happens, at least I'll be sleeping!
