What's this life for?
In the immortal words of the Creed song I ask all of you for your opinions of what is the purpose of life? I've pondered it for most of my life and originally I thought it was for the purpose of perpetuating life, ie a family and kids, but that really makes no sense because that renders each life meaningless, only the next life is what the purpose is for.
So I ask all of you, what is your opinion of the purpose, if any, of why we are here?Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: What's this life for?
Coincidence that the Universe began, and adaptability that explains our current state of being.
It just so happens that life began, and we are simply just one of the organisms that has been able to adapt to survive. No faith is necessary to understand why we are here, just logic and reason. That's not to say faith is wrong, it's just my opinion that simple science can explain your question.
We've been able to adapt to our surroundings to maximize our potential (actually, I can't be certain we've reached our peak), and we are simply a result of evolution.
I am sure there are other planets elsewhere in the Universe which support life as well, but there is no telling what kind of life that is. Human beings, or Homo sapiens, are just one species that has been able to survive under our current biological situation.
I am willing to bet there are planets out there, with different elements and biological resources, which house species we can't even imagine. It all depends on the organism and it's ability to adapt to it's surroundings.
We, as well as the rest of the species of this planet, have been able to adapt to Earth's elements. Had we not been able to make the adaption to our surroundings, we wouldn't be here.
If you're looking for a one word explanation for our purpose, I think "survival" sums it up. It's merely chance that we are here, and the whole purpose of our lives is to survive. For without survival, there is no life.
Note: I think we can keep this thread open, depending on whether or not we can keep the content free from religious and political bantering. I tried to keep my post neutral in terms of not getting into religious/political specifics, while at the same time explaining why I hold the beliefs I do. If the Administration deems the content too anti-ToS, then locking the thread is fine. I do, however, believe we can have this conversation without going against the ToS.Last edited by Double Eights; 12-20-2008, 10:42 PM. -

Re: What's this life for?
To live. I don't believe in any other rubbish or nonsense. We're here purely by luck, and our existence isn't anything special, and it has no special purpose... We're here to live our lives and then die. That's it.Comment

Without getting to into it, I don't think there is anyway that such a complex being as humans were just created by luck. We're too complex for us to just be created by luck.
I think the goal is to find happiness.WUSTLComment

I think many of these answers are in tune with mine. To achieve happiness. They seem different because people are inserting their definition for happiness.WUSTLComment

Re: What's this life for?
There have been some really great answers but I'm disappointed to see that there really aren't any original ones. I honestly don't buy into the family concept because as I said, that makes no sense. If your purpose is to create a family then there is no real purpose since that is the next-gen's purpose and so on and so forth.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Re: What's this life for?
The purpose is whatever you make. There is no set purpose to life. Humans won't be here forever. If you want some fantasy to believe in go ahead and set that as your purpose.
I like to think my purpose is to enjoy my life while positively affecting the joy others have with theirs lives as well. I'm happy and I'm going to continue to be until I die.Comment

Re: What's this life for?
I'm not quite sure what the purpose is. I believe God created us, but I really don't know why He created us. I don't know and it really doesn't matter.
I guess we're just to enjoy life and please the Man upstairs.
And if that's not why we're here, then it doesn't matter to me since I'm going to live life the same regardless. I guess each individual person has their own purpose to life.Comment

Re: What's this life for?
There is no set purpose for everyone. You make your own purpose. Some may find that purpose through a church, others might find it through a child.
My own personal purpose is to find as much truth in the short time that I am here and to be the most moral person that I can be. I find this goal can be best achieved through doubt, skepticism, and science. Unfortunately I feel the vast majority of information that is presented in society is designed to deflect and limit disillusionment. It's why I feel people accept so many things without getting beyond the surface story.
And of course, I can't blame people, hearing something that contradicts your world view hurts, so the the natural response is to cover it up, rationalize it, or distort it. So, one of my main goals in life is to hold myself to that strict standard of facing the truth the best that I can, so then I can make the best decisions that I can.Comment
