Re: New Year's Resolution: Be Selfish

Yeah man, selfish doesnt = successful

You just dont see the real problem those people have

The way you treat others is an indication of how you really feel about yourself too

You're happier giving happiness away than chasing it for yourself.

Go for it man, I had the same problem. I go to high school and play on sports teams so I heard it all the time and it rubbed off on me too.

I have pretty much given it up, I say them ever so often and when I do it feels weird.

I say go for it man. Once you're successful, then you can start worrying about other people, if you feel they are worth your time.

Re: New Year's Resolution: Be Selfish

Wow, I'm surprised I was able to type so well based on my level of drunkeness at the time. But regardless, it was a pretty heartfelt post.

I don't know if I'm going to make this my New Year's Resolution or not yet, but it does really seem like people who worry about themselves first do better than those who put others before them.

I dislike talking about myself, bragging, ignoring people and showing off, and that seems to be the 4 keys to success from what I've seen so far. For some reason, those characteristics are held by people who see success in the areas I talked about in my first post, and they are rewarded by our society for that behavior.

The loud-mouthed, gelled up hair, button-open shirt guy who won't give anyone the time of day unless he wants something from them seems to be doing better than a guy like me at this point in my young life.

Mostly everyone I know likes me, and if they don't, I don't know about it. I treat everybody with respect, I make conversation and listen to people if they have something to say, and if I see the opportunity, I will go out of my way to make someone else happy. Not because I want something from them, but because I think it makes the world a better place.

I do believe how you act always comes back to you, but I haven't really seen the reward of me trying to be a good person the way I thought I would. And again, I don't try to be a good person because I get something out of it, that's just who I am and who I try to be.

Dre, Mike, GSW, that's all good advice. Maybe I should focus on myself a little more, or at least finding myself. I'm about to graduate from UF in the Spring, and it's a crazy and scary time in our country right now, where I don't know where I'll be living or what I'll be doing in 6 months, especially with the degree I'm getting, since Advertising is really falling off like a lot of other things.

I'm just looking at these douches that eek by in school, party like crazy, and are idiots who live in a narcissistic fantasy world... and these are guys that seem like they have everything, jobs lined up after school, girls they treat like crap, money from their parents, nice cars, etc. And people enjoy being around these dbags and look up to them as role models and examples of social success, while the good people who care about others typically get overlooked. This can be seen on all levels of society, from high school all the way up to A-Listers in Hollywood, where Paris Hilton will get more attention looking at herself in a mirror at a high-priced store than a celebrity doing charity work for underpriveleged kids.

Anyways, sorry for this rambling pity party post... but I feel like something has got to change in my life for me to achieve happiness and I think that I need to put the focus on myself a little bit more for that to occur. I honestly don't even think I'm capable of keeping the original resolution for longer than a few days lol, but need to find a happy medium somewhere.

They may look succesful but most of them hate who they are because no one likes them. You may not have the material things but at least you'll have people that like you.

Re: New Year's Resolution: Be Selfish

Ya know brankles, I actually had a similar New Year's Resolution a couple of years ago. I was like the nicest guy in the world and was dumped three consecutive times. So I decided to be more concerned about myself. And honestly, there is nothing wrong with that. But eventually, I found myself attempting to just be selfish in general. And if its not who you are (which it doesn't seem to be), its not going to work. Its to difficult to instantly try to be something or someone you are not. Like others have said, you'll be misreable before you know it. It aint worth it homie.

Oh yeah, and merry christmas too.

What in the world does "do better" and "success" mean? You get to bang out hot girls? You can get a credit line to buy a Benz that you can't afford?

Being overly materialistic is pointless. It doesn't bring you happiness.

but I haven't really seen the reward of me trying to be a good person the way I thought I would
What do you want? A few grand in your pocket? People to be calling you all day? Mad bitches on your tip?

You probably won't get those being nice or responsible.

As boring as it is, financial security, health, and friendship may not be as exciting or glamorous, but they're rewards that are worth more.

If you don't feel that way, sell cocaine. Normally when I say that, I'm joking, but if you really feel that inspired by clowns, selling cocaine gives you a 2 month "baller trial". Money, fake friends, sleazy girls, a loss of dignity, and more can be all yours.

Re: New Year's Resolution: Be Selfish

Here's the best advice. Make your New Years Resolution to be the best person you can.Only you and your conscience will know how to get there. Don't worry about what we or any other person beside those who have known you for a long time think. "Success" and "popularity" are fleeting concepts, just like the foolhardiness of youth is. (Thank God on the last..) Just live your life so that when you look back in the future, you can feel that it was worthwhile... And then you will have the sense of true happiness that none of the things you are pondering as being what's really important right now will matter!

It solves everyone on here's problems.

Most of the whiners on this board have one of three problems:

                            1. No female companions

                            2. No money

                            3. No surprise anal sex

There's only one thing that can solve all three.
