I ran, jumped a hedge and jumped back into the UPS truck. The dogs had stopped and were sniffing the ground. I would of thought I would of lost that fight. Even though they came at me, I kinda felt a little worried for the dogs that they wouldnt get back into their yard and possibly get hit by a car or something.
Haha. I have some contractors who do yardwork in the summer. I was dog sitting for my brothers (1 pit and 1 boxer) when the crew came one afternoon. They went around the side of the house and saw both of the dogs standing at full attention and immediately ran back into the front yard. I forgot that I had them in the back but I couldnt imagine walking around the corner and seeing those 2.

As for the fight. A lot of these scenarios assume that the you're gonna be standing still while the dog will be running at you. That takes some real balls to do so. Most likely the dog will be chasing you and will knock you on the ground where the mauling will commence.

I remember playing in the woods behind my house when I was about 10 years old. From where I was standing, I could see my friends house across the street. He had just pulled in the driveway in his dad's truck, so I was gonna go see if he was allowed to come outside. As soon as I had that thought, I heard growling behind me. I knew it was a dog, so I turned my head around slowly trying not to provoke it. The dog was about 4 feet away and on all fours it was pretty close to my eye level. I was scared as hell because it looked like it wanted to kill me.

The only way for me to get away was to go back the way I came or take a leap of faith. I said **** it and jumped into the ditch. It seemed like I was in the air forever. We never went into the ditch much because it was full of thorns, sticks, and numerous snake sightings. Fortunately, I jumped far enough out to clear most of the thorns, but my legs and arms were still pretty scratched and bloodied up. That was the least of my concern though. I climbed up the hill, flew into the house, and didn't look back.

That's the one of the few times in my life that I can remember having a genuine flight response. If a dog came after me today and I couldn't avoid it, I'd kick it in the mouth with full force and hope that's enough to slow it down. I'd have no problem beating the hell of a dog with a bat or big stick if I had one nearby. If it's gotta come down to one of us, I plan on coming out on top.

Good point, no way i hell i'd be able to beat one of those police dogs in fight. The bite strength they possess is insane and once they lock on it's over...

I know its from Wikipedia, but its all cited, so its good enough for me:

Despite his results, some view his methods as outdated. Among his methods are quick leash corrections, quick assertive touches, and walks to drain energy. One controversial method he uses is the alpha roll, where he physically rolls a dog on its back. Patricia McConnell writes in her book The Other End of The Leash, "Well-socialized, healthy dogs don't pin other dogs to the ground." (p. 138)

Dr. Nicholas Dodman, the director of the Animal Behavior Clinic at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine of Tufts University, has said "Cesar Millan's methods are based on flooding and punishment. The results, though immediate, will be only transitory." 1

Jean Donaldson, the San Francisco SPCA Director of The Academy for Dog Trainers has criticized Millan for physically confronting aggressive dogs and using choke collars for fearful dogs.[10]

On September 6, 2006, the American Humane Association issued a press release criticizing Millan's tactics and called on the National Geographic Channel to cease airing the program immediately. [11]

In October 2006, the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants wrote a letter to the National Geographic Channel regarding concerns "that the program may lead children to engage in unsafe behaviors." The Association called for a change in the program's rating of TV-G.

Wow... I guess this is one way.

                http://www.bakersfieldnow.com/news/local/37069754.html

A 9-year-old Bakersfield boy is being called a hero after he saved a girl and her dog from a pit bull attack.

Drew Heredia said he and a friend were walking a small dog Dec. 30 when a pit bull jumped on the dog. The unidentified 12-year-old girl reportedly tried to save her dog, prompting the pit bull to turn on her.

Heredia said he jumped on the pit bull and applied a choke hold that he learned while taking classes at a Brazilian jujitsu studio in southwest Bakersfield.

"It was kind of a hear-pounding moment," Heredia said. "It was very scary."

He said he held the dog for 20 minutes until an animal control officer arrived.

“At first, I wanted to kick it, but then I thought it’s not a good idea, because it could get my leg,” Heredia said.

The girl was taken to Mercy Southwest Hospital where she was treated for puncture wounds.

The pit bull was quarantined at the animal control office, where it will be euthanized after 10 days. No one has claimed the dog.

The girl's dog was injured, but it's expected to survive. The dog ran away during the attack but returned home Friday afternoon.

Re: Could you fight a Dog?

Im pretty big and would like to think that I could take a lot of punishment, even from a dog, but I think I would need to get lucky in order to take down a big dog. My girlfriend has two dogs, and both of them could kick my *** if they really wanted to. She has a german shepherd who was abused in his previous home and he's really skinny and stuff, and then another dog (not sure what kind) who is a beast, but a big baby. In a fight, I think I could take down the bigger one, but Ive seen them fight and the smaller one is much quicker and (seems) to have a much more vicious bite.

The title of this thread just cracked me up. Where else would a random question like this get discussed. Awesome.

As for the question, if it came down to one of us dying, I'd like to think it's gonna be the dog. Even if the dog clamped down on your arm, you've got another one to fight with. That arm may get torn up, but the other arm would be inflicting as much damage as possible, with anything I could find to inflict it. That being said, I don't want to fight a dog.

I never really had to use force to hit a dog but the first blow I'd be going for would be the jaw. If it got a hold of me, I'd probably try and break a rib. I think I'd take out a dog. I was thinking about choking a dog to death or snapping its neck if I ever got into that type of situation. One of those I hope I'm ready type of moments.

That's like saying you're going to strike out Albert Pujols with nothing but fastballs down the middle. Dude, you're going right into the powerhouse by going for the neck/head! You know dogs have teeth, right?
