School seeks to forfeit 100-0 win

DALLAS -- A Texas high school girls basketball team on the winning end of a 100-0 game has a case of blowout remorse.

Now officials from The Covenant School say they are trying to do the right thing by seeking a forfeit and apologizing for the margin of victory.

"It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened," Kyle Queal, the head of the school, said in a statement, adding the forfeit was requested because "a victory without honor is a great loss."

The private Christian school defeated Dallas Academy last week. Covenant was up 59-0 at halftime.

A parent who attended the game told The Associated Press that Covenant continued to make 3-pointers -- even in the fourth quarter. She praised the Covenant players but said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points.

"I think the bad judgment was in the full-court press and the 3-point shots," said Renee Peloza, whose daughter plays for Dallas Academy. "At some point, they should have backed off."

Dallas Academy coach Jeremy Civello told The Dallas Morning News that the game turned into a "layup drill," with the opposing team's guards waiting to steal the ball and drive to the basket. Covenant scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and "finally eased up when they got to 100 with about four minutes left," he said.

Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and about 20 girls in its high school. It is winless over the last four seasons. The academy boasts of its small class sizes and specializes in teaching students struggling with "learning differences," such as short attention spans or dyslexia.

There is no mercy rule in girls basketball that shortens the game or permits the clock to continue running when scores become lopsided. There is, however, "a golden rule" that should have applied in this contest, said Edd Burleson, the director of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. Both schools are members of this association, which oversees private school athletics in Texas.

"On a personal note, I told the coach of the losing team how much I admire their girls for continuing to compete against all odds," Burleson said. "They showed much more character than the coach that allowed that score to get out of hand. It's up to the coach to control the outcome."

In the statement on the Covenant Web site, Queal said the game "does not reflect a Christ-like and honorable approach to competition. We humbly apologize for our actions and seek the forgiveness of Dallas Academy, TAPPS and our community."

Covenant coach Micah Grimes did not immediately respond to a message left by The Associated Press on Thursday.

Queal said school officials met with Dallas Academy officials to apologize and praised "each member of the Dallas Academy Varsity Girls Basketball team for their strength, composure and fortitude in a game in which they clearly emerged the winner."

Civello said he appreciated the gesture and has accepted the apology "with no ill feelings."

At a shootaround Thursday, several Dallas Academy players said they were frustrated during the game but felt it was a learning opportunity. They also said they are excited about some of the attention they are receiving from the loss, including an invitation from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban to see an NBA game from his suite.

"Even if you are losing, you might as well keep playing," said Shelby Hyatt, a freshman on the team. "Keep trying, and it's going to be OK."

Peloza said the coach and other parents praised the Dallas Academy girls afterward for limiting Covenant to 12 points in the fourth quarter. She added that neither her daughter nor her teammates seemed to dwell on the loss.

"Somewhere during that game they got caught up in the moment," Peloza said of the Covenant players, fans and coaches. "Our girls just moved on. That's the happy part of the story."

Well, at least they're trying to go about it in the right way. It might be a good idea to fire the coach and get someone who is well-versed in sportsmanship.

        LOL, you think so doctor??

        I can see it now......

Coach: "Okay girls, if they take it hard to the rack, don't be shy about getting all Posey on them. Also, we'll press them 'til the cows come home."

Point Guard: "But Coach, we're up 60."

Coach: "Just shut your mouth. I got a G note riding on this."

I have no problem with them beating them by that score if they're playing them straight up when the game got out of hand, but to continue pressing...sounds very Belichick-like.

            This is pure sexism.

High school Girls basketball is without a doubt the sport with the least parity.

My senior year, our females beat another school's females 11something to 12, and were up 90-8 in the third quarter. That same year, my football team beat a team 84-0 while we were missing 10 starters to suspension. We threw 5 passes in the first quarter and none for the rest of the game. We sat all the good starters at the end of the first quarter, and subbed the rest out in the second quarter. The second half, we sent out the the pure scrubs and played the JV team in the fourth quarter, yet scored every possession. Some teams just suck, but that **** is on them.

Maybe the teams that go down 40-2 should forfeit. The full court press is a bit much, but there's only so much you can do. I'd be more embarrassed if a girl had a wide open fast break and just stopped. Stop sucking or get off the court.

              I can't say I have a problem with it.

I understand why other people say it was "wrong", but as a former athlete in HS, I far preferred when the other team tried throughout the game and didn't hang back. I would be more offended by a team thinking they needed to just take it easy on us and let us score a few, or by a team that felt the need to apologize to us because we flat out sucked.

I'd rather lose 100-0 and have the other team respectfully shake hands and that be it, than to lose 100-0 and have the other team feeling bad for us, or lose 80-20 because they decided to take it easy. The 20 points doesn't mean anything if the other team wasn't giving it their all.

Ok let me start off by saying I understand why the coach is catching heat for this.

BUT I also feel, why should a school dumb down its talent just so someones feelings are not hurt. It is a game of WIN OR LOSE. It does not matter if you lose by 100 or 1. You still lost. What makes it even worse is if you get beat by 100 points and don't score a single basket then I think the person who should be taking the heat is the coach for the team that lost. They better find someone who can get some talent in that school OR who can do a better job coaching.

Bottom line, I feel the team that got beat is crying. Man up take your *** whopping and prepare for the next game. Who cares if the other coach you feel like he did something wrong. HE WON, YOU LOST. End of story.

Hmm - did you read the article?

It's the team who won that's seeking a forfeit, and the girls on the other team were actually fine with what happened. They said it was a learning experience, and that it's kind of fun having the attention that they're getting.

Yea I did and have also heard it on the radio the last several hours. The people are tearing into this coach. I just disagree with that.

I know I said "they" are crying, maybe that came out wrong. Maybe I should of said "sport writers". I understood the winning team was looking for the forfeit and the other team was fine with it. I was more pointing my comment to the "view" of these sports writers.

The coach was wrong in pressing and taking 3s, but there is no way they should forfeit the game. They should have held the ball on offense and taken a shot with 5 seconds or less on the shot clock. On defense they should have gone into a zone and not pressed. To forfeit is stupid. They won, didn't cheat in any way, so no problem. Just because a school with only a few girls lost big, doesn't mean the other team should be punished. Maybe the other team should look into joining a smaller division or becoming independents and only scheduling small schools like them.

If you are up 20 or 30+ points, there is no reason in the world to run a full court defense and run an up tempo offense.

Go to a laid back man to man defense, milk the clock, don't be a *** like this coach trying to get a 100-0 feat.

As far as forfeiting, I disagree. Why should the team suffer because they played better and did as the coach instructed? Now it becomes unfair to both clubs.

In one of my HS games back in the day, we won a game 54-3. It was a odd situation though as the original team quit as they didn't want to play for the current coach so the school got some last minute players.
