Re: Another Great Tasting Beer Thread
Nice post 55.
I will say this, winter may not be the best time of year for rookies to break into the wide world of beer beyond Bud Light. Winter seasonal are the years fullest and richest beers.
Apostle, you need to pin point what you don't like about dark beers. A dark beer can have so many different flavors and textures and weight. Are they too flavorful? Is there a specific flavor you're not liking (I don't like coffee so I try to stay away from long roasted beers)? Do they make you feel bloated or full? Lots of stouts & porters can do this since they are heavier then a lager (bud light). You gotta remember though, you're drinking his better beer not to get your buzz on but to enjoy the drink (you'll get the buzz anyway). If it takes you 30 minutes to drink the beer, so be it, as long as it doesn't get nasty when warm.
My advice is to try stepping away from American common Lager by trying some ales. Ales are a step up the flavor wagon but don't get into the fuller longer roasting times of porters and stouts. If you have any kind of brewery near you go in and see if they have a beer sampler. You'll get 6-15 samples that you can try out and see what you like. Even better, take a brewery tour. They're free and include a sampler at the end. What's really good about them though is that the tour guide is usually really knowledgeable about beer and can tell you more about their specific beer and maybe help you pinpoint what you like and don't like.

Re: Another Great Tasting Beer Thread
I've been on this crazy hops kick for the last couple months so I've been trying IPA's almost exclusively.
My favorite, and it's not even close, is still Stone Ruination.
I have been enjoying Sierra Nevada's new entry Ruthless Rye though too.Oakland Athletics San Jose Sharks

Re: Another Great Tasting Beer Thread
Since Mabster just mentioned them, my favorite IPA's recently (in no particular order):
Lagunitas Maximus IPA
Stone Ruination IPA
Victory Hop Devil
Victory Hop Wallop
Heavy Seas - Loose Cannon Hop3
Highly recommend any of them. The Loose Cannon is a little different from your basic IPA but is just awesome.
On a side note I'm moving from NY to VA in a couple weeks and just made the amazing discovery that the Giant supermarket chain sells "Make your own 6 pack" for 10 dollars with some pretty quality microbrew options available including Lagunitas, Victory, some local VA/PA breweries, Southern Tier and others. A much wider variety of good beer to choose from than any supermarket I've seen in NY. Plus I found a local beer/wine store there that has beer tastings every Friday evening. Needless to say I'm pumped for the moveComment

Re: Another Great Tasting Beer Thread
I get depressed when I even go out to a bar around here.
I look around and everyone is drinking bud light and I can't even order a Blue Moon, which is fairly popular...
I'm going to start buying my rare beer when I'm in Birmingham, so I'm also interested where you're buying that, Fish..
The local store by my house stocks a few of my favorite imports.
Also, have any of you from the Bham area ever been to The J. Clyde, before ?
Here's their beer menu. The food is pretty good too, but the beer selection is outrageous..
