Re: Another Great Tasting Beer Thread

With fall upon us it's time to start drinking the big, dark, chewy brews that warm the soul. Among my pickups over the weekend was this gem that I've never had before. Port Brewing Co's description says it all:

"Not your Dad's Wimpy 30 Weight is how our original label used to describe this massive chewy and thick beer. Code named by our brewers-"The Big Black Nasty," this is monstrous dark ale is brewed to no particular style. Thick and sludgy like oil from the crankcase of a wheat threshing combine, Old Viscosity blurs the boundaries of Porter, Stout, Old Ale and Barleywines.

A blended beer that mixes old and new brewing traditions into one finished beer, Old Viscosity starts out with 80% of the packaged beer produced from a stainless steel fermentation. It then joins another 20% Barrel Aged Old Viscosity (from a previous batch) that has been aging in bourbon barrels. The blend of the two beers yields an incredibly rich and luscious ale that reveals chocolate and cocoa notes melded to silky body of burnt wood, vanilla and ash.

Let us know what u though of it Fluff.

I ended up drinking dark heavy beers all summer long. I know backasswards but I just enjoy dark beer with alot of chocolate and caramel flavors more than real hoppy beers. I mean I enjoy IPA once in a while but I enjoy my darks more.

Anyway, so last night I went to my local shop and got some

            Flying Dog IPA

            Flying Dog Old Scatch Amber

I got to say, I like drinking Abita Amber and i saw that Flying Dog had their own version so I scooped it up. I see why it won the Silver medal, it is a GREAT GREAT session brew. I could sit down and kill 6+ of these and it would be a great evening.

But I am still going back to my darks after these sixers run out this week lol.

Amazing! It goes down so smooth and at 10% alcohol it packs a very nice punch. A perfect beer for those cold nights. Highly recommended to anybody who enjoys stouts. We got Port Brewing Co beers in our area just this year and everything I have had from them has been awesome.

                  Jack’s Pumpkin Spice Ale

Jack’s is brewed by Anheuser-Busch under the Michelob label, and it’s brewed with "farm-grown pumpkins, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and cloves" to a 5.5% alcohol beer.

Appearance: Clear, bright orange, a thick off-white head.

Smell: Smells good—sweet and pumpkin pie spices, but not harsh.

Taste: There’s a sweet malt base (Crystal malts is what I’m thinking, though there’s some hard candy sugar thing maybe too) and the spices accentuate it well.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, very clean. A bit of a crisp edge.

Not my favorite Pumpkin flavored Beer but not bad.

                      Post Road Pumpkin Ale

Presentation: 12oz brown long neck with a no freshness date to be found.

Appearance: Amber with an orange tinge with a nice clarity. Decent creamy white head that sticks.

Smell: Sweet pie spice aroma (nutmeg, corriander, clove, all-spice). Light earthy hop and faint caramel malt aroma also.

Taste: Moderately bodied and crisp and smooth on the mouth. Loads of pumpkin pie spice upfront with a earthy/woody hop character. Underlying malt sweetness with flavours of caramel and sweet bread. Definite beer characteristics, which is uncommon with the many overdone pumpkin ales out there. Pumpkin flavour is very faint yet still adds to the complexity, a little on the sweet side. Just enough bitterness from the hops to balance yet not clash wit the spices. Mild tea-like hop flavour hides around the edges of the palate with a sweet grainy finish.

Notes: One of the better pumpkin ales to be had ... pumpkin pie all over. It's generally hard to have more than one pumpkin ale in a row, however this one is pretty damn drinkable.

                      Serving type: bottle

Probably my favorite tasting Pumpkin Ale that I have found so far.

Do you find Blue Moon in the liquor stores? Their fall brew is Harvest Moon which is a pumpkin one...that and the Jack's listed above should be the easiest to find.

Loved the Weihenstephaner and understand where all the hype is... just a great Hefeweisen. It's a nice pint bottle for $2.99 too, which is great for me since that's generally what I drink in a sitting at home with dinner.

The Stone Brewing Ruination IPA was CRAZY. Not sure if it knocked the Dogfish Head 90-Minute IPA off the top of my list, but it's pretty damn close. Tasting them both and comparing might make my head explode with joy, but I think I'm heading that way this weekend. The bitterness was off-the-charts (100+ International Bitterness Units, proclaimed proudly on the back of the bottle), but the nose was so incredible that I couldn't stop smelling it. I tasted it for like 3 hours after I finished it and kept smelling my empty glass haha... try it out if you're a hop head for sure... it was something else.

Stumble, What do you think of the Sierra Torpedo Extra IPA???

I bought a sixer of them the other week and while I am admittedly not a huge hop head. I do enjoy the slightly less hop IPA's. Like the Flying Dog IPA. I just found the Torpedo was to bitter. I just wanted to gauge if it is just the beer I don't like or if I just have not drank a really good IPA?

Re: Another Great Tasting Beer Thread

Some of them are really bitter and that's the dominant flavor profile (the Ruination fits into that category, but its RIDUCLOUS nose saved it for me). IPAs in general tend to be bitter compared to most other types of beer, but something like the Dogfish Head puts that in the background and you really taste and smell the hops more than anything else, but it's still pretty bitter by normal standards. I haven't had the Sierra IPA, but I find that IPAs normally fall into the "bitter + amazing smells" category or the "not-so-bitter + hoppy flavor with not so amazing smells" category, which is probably where the Flying Dog is (haven't tried that one either).

Someone who has more experience with IPAs like Motown can probably give a better answer than that (I'm still a noob in regards to IPAs, I didn't even really give them a chance until a year or so ago). Ha, a good rule of thumb for you would be avoid any of them that talk about bitterness as a main feature of the beer in the description -- the Ruination was talking about how it will destroy your tastebuds for all future beers and things like that, so it was a pretty good indication of what was coming. That and the 100+ IBU rating on the back of the bottle.

I will say that if you try the Dogfish Head 90-Minute IPA and don't like it, then you're probably just not meant to drink IPAs. That's the standard for me anyway, and seems to be the favorite IPA of most of the hop heads in this thread as well. If you can't find it in La maybe we can do the beer exchange with that. Also, I found out that I can get Abita Turbo Dog as well as Abita Amber at another big liquor store downtown -- haven't tried either one yet, but it was nice to find them there.

Aiight, my NEXT "great tasting beer" endeavor will be this one peeps:
                                yall cracked open this yet?

                                Commercial Description:http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/great-d...l-stout/37652/
Crack open Yeti Imperial Stout’s sophisticated sibling -- Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout. Although these beers come from the same clan, they have entirely different personalities. Aging on a blend of French and toasted oak chips infuses a subtle oak and vanilla character into Yeti’s already intense chocolate, roasted coffee malt flavor and hugely assertive hop profile. Who says you can’t tame a Yeti? 75 International Bittering Units (IBUs).
