Right hand over my heart (unless I have a hat, then it's over my heart), left hand behind my back. I look for the flag in the stadium, if not my head is down (eyes still open). I modestly lip-sync the National Anthem most every time.

Re: Where are your hands during the National Anthem?
Someone at a Baylor message board was making a big deal about the Missouri players standing with their hands behind their backs during the National Anthem and said it was very disrespectful that they didn't have their hands over their hearts.
So I was wondering, where are your hands while standing?
Mine are always behind my back.Comment

I'm usually wearing a hat, so I take off my hat and hold it over my heart. If I'm not wearing a hat, I'll hold my open palm against my chest on the side of my heart.Favorite Sports Teams

Hat is always off and placed on my seat. Right hand over my heart, left hand behind my back. At the end I look up to the sky, tap my heart twice for my deceased father, and say "play ball".Comment

Re: Where are your hands during the National Anthem?
Yeah, I put them behind my back, but I'm in the same vein as GSW in regards to mandatory recitations of nationalistic dogma before sporting events. I mostly do it to avoid getting into shouting matches with people when I'm trying to have a good time at a damn basketball game... I would just stand there otherwise, or remain seated... but that doesn't ever end well for anyone (ask Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf).Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

Re: Where are your hands during the National Anthem?
I was taught if you have a hat you put it over your heart, otherwise hands just at your sides. I was only taught to put your hand over your heart in the pledge of allegiance.
I can see people getting mad if someone is talking and being really disruptive during it, but if you spend the whole anthem looking around at people and getting angry about where their hands are, that's just as bad as being disruptive imo.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

Re: Where are your hands during the National Anthem?
Agreed on that 2nd point entirely, NYJets.
It's not like I hate America or something, it's just not something that I feel is necessary to have national pride or to show respect for Americans who came before us, died in wars, etc. And its place at sporting events is questionable at best in my view...
I dunno... I guess I'm just not a fan of jingoistic singing and chanting in unison as a sign of national unity, especially in non-political venues like a sporting event... reminds me of China or Soviet Russia. There are better ways to show your pride or "support the troops" than by singing a 250 year-old song... like volunteering at a veteran's hospital, for example.
Respect to everyone who does put your hand over your heart or whatever else, I just don't see the need for it and don't like feeling compelled to do it at sporting events.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

Especially considering they do that in Toronto and we're not even American!Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Where are your hands during the National Anthem?
Really?! That's hilarious and ridiculous. I'll stand for the anthem, my hands go wherever they wish to at the time. I'll take my hat off more to please others but if I'm holding a dog and a beverage it stays on. I don't do anything for God Bless America.Comment

Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment
