Re: Just failed my driving test...

I failed my first time because I hit a cone when parking. My was on a course that was 2 "lanes", but the 2 lanes were big enough for 1 truck to fit on. I was in my dad's truck and I couldn't make the turn while still on the road. I still made it into the spot and wouldn't have hit a car parked next to me if there was actually a car. Hitting a cone is automatic failure. Took it a week or 2 later in my car(after I got it) and passed without a problem.

I did a similar thing. Did all my practicing in my dad's car, then day of the test I use my mom's car. Had no idea how to cut on the bright lights in her car....FAILED. Didn't even get to take it out of park.

        Did pass 2 days later.

Yep. Did that a few years ago when I was in Americorps. The vehicle inspection is no joke as well. Gotta get under the bus and explain everything inside and out. Then you gotta actually drive and dock it.

I failed the first time. Didn't bring the bus close enough to the yellow line. You have to get so close but not go over it.

Re: Just failed my driving test...

I took driver's ed at a local high school during the summer one year. It consisted of a driving range in the high school parking lot and then you went out twice on the road with the instructor and then of course the written test. If you passed all those they gave you a waiver which allowed you to go to DMV and get your license without having to take any tests there.

Anywho, on one of the days we had our road part I was coming up to a light that was green. I started to brake and the instructor started to yell at me for braking when the light was green. I guess he couldn't see the line of cars ahead of us that were stopped. Since the light was green I guess he expected me to just plow through all the cars ahead of me....who tests the testers?

Then she tried to drive my car back with the E brake up, asking me what was happening.
That's crap. They should not do that. Now if they had said multiple times not to listen to them when you're driving, it's acceptable (though still stupid). If not, that's BS.

I failed my first driving test too, but my instructor was a complete *******. I had never driven a car before my test (in my state, legally, you aren't allowed to) so it was my first time driving during my 6 drives. I did pretty good until my instructor said, "Ride the white line here" instead of "Pull into that church parking lot". So I just got into the shoulder and kept going until he realized I was going to keep going so he took the wheel and turned us into the parking lot and was pissed that I didn't pull in. I had never heard the expression, "Ride the white line" before and being so nervous as it was one of the first times I was behind the wheel, he should've just said, "Pull into the church parking lot".

He said he'd be able to retest me later in the year, and when I went to see him, he was an absolute dick. He said he had called me to his room twice in the past week and I had never showed. But I was never called into his room... so when I said "You never told me to come here until now" he flipped out. Now I was a pretty good kid but I wasn't going to let this guy just go off on me when he was wrong so I let him have a piece of my mind.

I told my friends about the confrontation and how much the guy was a jerk and was mostly laughed at because now I would have to pay to take the course over the summer. That is, until the next year when he was the baseball coach and completely ruined our baseball team. Turns out he's just a wannabe, couldn't hack it, arrogant punk and he was completely exposed in my junior and senior years. Looking back on it now, it's kind of funny that I was the first to despise the guy and everyone else ended up doing the same once they got to know him. I got the last laughs there.

I ended up having to pay to take a summer driving course. Sucked because I had to retake all the written stuff (I had gotten a 94% in Driver's Ed, just failed the driving part) and simulation and then drive again. This time, I had a different instructor. This guy was wayyyy better and I passed the test easily, not a single problem.

Looking back, I was a better driver my second time around, which makes sense. But I was definitely good enough to have passed the first time if it wasn't for the jerk instructor. I consider myself a pretty good driver and have been error free since I got my license.

I didn't have to take the driver's test. I took the written test to get my permit when I was fifteen, then had driver's ed at school which gave me a waiver allowing me not to take the test. It's really stupid, though, as we never actually went on the road during the driver's ed class. We just drove around in an empty parking lot with cones set up.

Did you guys ever "drive" with your parents when you were young? My dad would always let me sit on his lap and drive the truck (he still had his hands on the wheel).

When we would go down to Baja, I started driving the Baja offroad bug on my own when I was about 9 or 10.. I think getting alot of seat time from a young age helped out.

I ran my dad's manual shift Isuzu into a tree when I was about ten. Somehow I managed not to do any damage to the exterior of the car but my dad said it never drove the same after that.

Re: Just failed my driving test...

I took my driving test in a big ole minivan, hardly the ideal vehicle for a driving test. I did well on the road test, got to the parallel parking and the parking in a parking space and, on the advice of my cousin i had measured side to side a regular parking spot at a mall earlier in the week. I dinged a cone in the practice test and when the instructor started to fail me, i asked him to hold on.

I tol dhim the spot seemed to small, he said No, so i took the tape measure out, measured the spot, it was 14.5 inches too small (thats what she said). Everyone who failed that day got to retake it.

I passed with flying colors on the re-take. That seriously pissed me off. I dont think the way they had the cones that any car, let alone a minivan at that point (mid 90's) woudlve fit in that spot.

Oddly enough, I took driver's ed in high school. I didn't have my learners when I took it so I couldn't do the in-car. I did the in-car portion of it over the summer about a year later. After that I just handed in my 40 hour log (which half of it was made up crap) and then I got my driver's license mailed to me lol. I didn't even have to take a test.

Yeah, but never on a real road. Usually on a dirt road at my grandparents.

Reminds me of my driving instructor, only kind of the opposite. She barely spoke a word of English (or as it sounded because her accent was so damn heavy), and she would tell me things and I would just nod like I understood. I had already had like 20 hours of driving under my belt with my dad's old stick-shift minivan, so driving was really a breeze for me at that point and what she said was kind of irrelevant IMO.

Anyway, I guess what she was telling me was that she wanted me to learn how to deal with road rage. Now this was kind of scary. We were at a red light in the front, and when it turned green I tried to step on the gas but we were going nowhere (this was before I realized what she was telling me). I thought maybe the parking brake somehow went up, I complained there was something wrong with the car, but it turned out she had her own set of pedals, which she abused way to much.

So her foot on the brake pedal overrode my gas push and there were cars behind me honking and forcing me to go. I was sweating in there because it just didn't feel right, cars passed to the right of us and I watched them look at us like it was my fault (because we were in a clearly labeled "Driver in training" car). The light turns red, and some cars remained behind me. I hear a four second long honk from the guy, look to my instructor, and she closes her eyes and smiles, saying, "Ah, musica celestial." I was like WTF!

                            I'll never forget that moment.

Re: Just failed my driving test...

I failed my test the first time ... which was 25 years ago!

I remember it distinctly. I felt like I breezed through the first 15 minutes. I drove slowly, always used my turn signal, held my stops. Then we get back to the DMV and I'm asked to parallel park between two cars on the curb -- with what I felt was a minimal amount of space.

So, I pull up to the car in front and I will be the first to admit -- I was VERY close! (I'm guessing 6-8 inches a the farthest points)

                              The following dialogue then ensued:

DMV Examiner: [staring down at his clipboard] Son, You are WAY to close to that vehicle!

Me: Should I back up and retry?

DMV Examiner: I really don't care what you do, son -- it's your test!

So I procede to finish the parallel parking in the position that I was already in.

I absolutely nailed it! In fact being so close is probably what saved me as I still felt it was a bit unfair of a challenge. There was only a couple feet of space between the three cars when I centered my car perfectly between the other two.

                              My big mistake?

I looked over at the DMV Examiner and smiled.

He failed me citing I exceeded the speed limit in a school zone.

                              Bastard.

Not really, except that the person I took the road test with was a complete biotch. Didn't say a freakin' word to me the entire time, which made me even more nervous than I already was. Then when I got into the office to get the paperwork completed, the first thing the lady at the desk says to me is, "Show-offs and speeders wrap themselves around telephone polls, so watch your !@# out there." Ohh-kay. Thanks for that vote of confidence.
