    I just took the hardest test I've ever taken.

    I'm trying to get into Grad School at UAB and had to take the Miller's Analogy Test this morning.

    For those who haven't taken the MAT...every question is organized like this...

    Dog:Paw::Horse: (a. hoof b. beak c. wing d. colt)

    Obviously you are looking for the pattern so Hoof would be the answer.

    It's 120 questions and you have 60 minutes to do it.

    The first 30 or so questions look like the example I gave...pretty easy. I'm flying through it thinking about the epic record setting score I'm about to get (599 out of 600) and then the sh** hits the fan.

    This test takes a sudden turn and the questions start to look like this...

    Monet: Paris:: (a. Manet b. Locke c. Shelley d. Gaugin) : Tahiti

    What? (I guessed and got it right, it's Gaugin, but good lord)

    Basically the last 30 questions are nothing but Philosophy, French Impressionists, Shapes that I've never heard of in my freaking life, and Early British Philosophers.

    I think I did ok, but good lord....I don't see how you can study for that thing.

    If I did fail it the first time around...I know what I'm studying for my next try.... Every freaking French Philosopher, artist, and composer as well as ridiculous geometric shapes that you will never see or talk about outside of the MAT test.

    I'm gonna go play some video games now and get rid of all this "learnin'" I've been doing.

      That sounds like an interesting test but sheesh it's not fair that it took a sudden left turn like that. Well at least it looks like you survived it.

        That's the thing about it.

        It would be different if it were on a specific aspect such as the MCAT, etc.

        But seriously...How the hell do you study for a test that basically covers every aspect of every part of life..... Mathematics, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, etc.

        Joe Average isn't going to have an indepth knowledge of the great 18th-19th century philosophers or French Impressionists.

          Joe Average wouldn't be in grad school anyway, so it evens out.

              I took the test a few months ago and I agree, it does take a sharp turn into a direction you totally weren't expecting. I remember getting frustrated halfway through and just picking random answers. But luckily I went back and reread a lot of the questions and changing a lot of my answers. Once I got past the initial frustration, I didn't find it to be that difficult.

              I don't think you "fail" though. They just compare your scores to people who have the same major (or applying to the same program) and to everyone else that has taken it. If you took it on the computer, they usually give you an unofficial score afterwards.

                  That test actually sounds interesting. I love **** like that.

                  I took the GMAT...twice. First time I studied for two straight weeks every night prior to the test, got frazzled on the 2nd math question during the test, and was mentally done. Scored a 510. Signed up the next day to take it again 2 months later. Didn't prepare a lick for it until the night before, thought the test was harder, and scored a 630. I thought that second time through on the GMAT was the hardest test I had ever taken.

                    I have taken it before. I scored high, but my brain works like that. I just got done taking the C-Set Test to get my teaching Credential, now that is a freaking test.

                      Monet and Gauguin are around the same time and are both French Impressionist Painter.

                          That might be true, but even the vast majority of college graduates won't know French painters unless the art class they were forced to take stressed that.

                          I'm taking the GRE for GW's poly sci graduate programs, but I'm pretty sure there are no painters or philosophers on that. And as a former engineering major, I should rock the other poly sci kids on the math section.

                              Gaugin was a french painter that went to Tahiti (missionary work, maybe?)and loved it so much, he never went back

                              actually saw that on the travel channel
