Yeah it's spreading pretty fast now over here in Australia (coming into our winter) and they have been closing school's etc to try to slow the spread. I think it was upgraded to the highest pandemic alert level but that is only relevant to how far it has spread, not the severity. It hasn't caused any deaths here and from what i had seen most of the deaths were in mexico when it first started but there hasn't been many since then.

I'm not too concerned right now but i would be if my 7 month old caught it.

The big problems if anything will come in the next flu season. That is what happened with the last flu disaster. Minor out breaks like we had now, then the next flu season millions died.

I agree, and I think a lot will die this winter. I just wish people would take this more seriously. A lot of people write it off as a flop because it hasn't exploded yet, it is nothing more than a time bomb.

Someone died of the swine flu in Hernando County, Florida today and that's where I currently am vacationing. Two people also died in Hillsborough County, where Tampa is located.

Indeed. The 1918 Spanish Flu actually originated as mild strain somewhat similar to this, but died by early summer. Then it came back by winter and ended up killing 50-100 million people.

Of course, I doubt that this virus will do that and I'm not going to worry about it. What will happen will happen. There's a lot more important things that are actually worth being concerned about that are going on in the world right now.

You have to remember in the 1920s most people thought the flu was caused by witches, who needed to be burned to alleviate the symptoms.


Anyways, the swine flu was real and EVERYONE died. You're all just ghosts sentenced to an eternity of posting on message boards.

I'm not really one to get caught up in sensationalistic media terror frenzies.

After 9/11, I wasn't scared of terrorists bombing us. I wasn't afraid of anthrax. I don't think Barack Obama is the anti-christ. And I'm not bothered by this whole swine flu thing. I think a lot of it has to do with me not watching Fox News.

Thought I'd revive this thread, this stuff is pretty interesting.

So, I'm a pediatrics resident and obviously we've been hearing a lot bout H1N1 (and seeing a lot too, including a few deaths) and what could possibly be headed our way. We just had a lecture from the chief epidemiologist and infection control guru at Vanderbilt.

Essentially, we're not sure what exactly is going to happen. Experts agree there will be a pandemic from H1N1- the question is, what type? Will it be more mild, like the 1957 Asian Flu, or will it be devastating like the 1918 Spanish flu? At this point in the year, you can't tell. Based on estimates, if it is a more mild pandemic, we would expect ~50,000 U.S. deaths (the regular seasonal flu kills somewhere around 30,000 each year). If it is like 1918, most estimates are coming in around 2 million U.S. deaths.

The thing that is scary is you have to look at who died in the 1918 pandemic- it was not the young and old that typically die from flu, it was mainly young, healthy people. No one is exactly sure why.

The H1N1 vaccine clinical trials are starting soon, and thankfully Vanderbilt is one of 8 test sites and I'm going to be enrolling.
