    Re: The OS Guitarists thread

Does anyone have any advice or know of a site with detailed information on what one would need for doing some recording? Not just of guitar/bass but also drums? I have no idea what to search for as my efforts thus far leave me feeling as though I'm missing something. One possibility I've seen seems like it could be:

    Instrument--->Mic--->Mixer--->Audio editing program (Garageband, etc.)

Would that provide a decent sounding recording or is there something else needed in there that I'm missing?

I got my guitar back yesterday from the music doctor. I'm glad I finally took it. I brought it in because of the string buzzing, but he told me my neck was out of alignment and my harmonics were off. It sounds even better than it did when I first bought it. It has convinced me to take any guitar I buy from now on to have it set up. Plus, it was only $35.

Yeah, you should get your guitars done once a year if you play a lot. It makes a HUGE difference to electric guitars and it still amazes me that a lot of people perservere with guitars that desperately need set ups.

Getting the intonation sorted out by a good technician will make your playing sound much better!

If you can afford it get this:

If you can't get this first:

As far as the Muff goes, you want the black one pictured on the right that comes in a wood box...

The tube driver has knockoffs, but they aren't really that great...

Both pedals are classics / essentials, IMHO...

What is the difference between the Russian made Big Muff and the NYC one?

Also, an OD question - would an (tube) OD pedal still be necessary if I used OD on my amp or if I ever got a tube amp?

The black one is built much more solidly and is waaaay more durable...

It's also thought that the distortion is more pleasing, but that's always a matter of opinion...

The NYC one feels and sounds like a 2nd tier knockoff of the black one to me...

As far as the tube driver goes, not "necessary", but waaaaaay warmer and truer that any effect built into a solid state amp and a nice change of pace from what you get with a tube amp...

Pedals are to change up the volume and tone "colors" from section to section and song to song, so it depends what you're going for...

Some guys "play" their pedal board more than their guitar, some can get a really wide range of sounds out of pretty much nothing...

For a lead player in a traditional classic lineup (Stones, Black Crowes, etc.) a Strat or Tele through a Mesa Boogie (with channel switching and a volume pedal) works well, while a complementary rhythm setup would be a Les Paul through a Marshall or Bogner with a tube driver...

The muff would be a nice 1st / 2nd option in both setups...

I've yet to find a reason for solid state amps, other then low cost and low maintenance...but a nice tube driver would make up for the lack of tubes in the amp...

I prefer warm / fat / and "clean-dirty", so that's a reference point for where my opinions on this come...

I agree but I have a really nice Fender jazzmaster amp that is solid state. For that genre the solid state sound actually works really well and you will see some very famous jazz players using them.

But I also have a Blues Deville which is tubes all the way and I love it.

If I was you Tendrils I would keep my set up fairly simple. You can go overboard with pedals, I feel that your sound needs to come from your fingers first and foremost. Back when I was in a band I had a tuner and a delay and I was perfectly content. The other guitarist had about 10 pedals and in the end his tone was all over the place.

                To each their own though.

I really want the Fender Deluxe Reverb re-issue tube amp. I need something to appease my inner rockabilly/surf appetite.

I'm still enjoying my delay pedal, that little thing is very versatile and its amazing what a little echo can do. I'm interested in a wah because it seems like it would fun to screw around with and is necessary for funk and just something to add a little flourish to some things. I really like the way fuzz sounds (ie: American Woman and of course Hendrix). Other than that, I'm not really interested in much else, though that volume pedal would be sweet.

Its hard to explain what I have in mind as far as my ultimate sound goes. As far as a clean tone I really dig rockabilly and the slapback/tape echo, but I like my reverb to be a little dirty. For my dirty tone, I want something bluesy and gritty/muddy which is why I went with a Les Paul first. Hard to explain, but country/southern blues comes to mind for some reason.

I finally got to play on a tube amp about three weeks ago and it was glorious. So smooth and vivid, plus the reverb was nice and bouncy and wet. I tried out a friend's Fender amp, but I forget what model it was off the top of my head. He also had a Marshall stack that sounded great for riffs and rhythm with a ton of power, but I didn't really dig the highs as they come off a bit sharp sounding.

What tube amps do you guys prefer? I would love to get a Fender tube amp, but really sure what is out there. I know I want some spring reverb so I can get that surf rock/rockabilly/blues sound, but as far as specific models I have no clue. I would love to buy the Deluxe Reverb reissue, but the price is a little...off putting ha - especially when there are more guitars to buy!

I've been neglecting learning songs and instead mainly just working on scales and building riffs. I've also been playing a bit more with the slide, learning how to mute and use my fingers. I've also been playing around with my capo and finger picking and coming up with some patterns I'm really digging.

Yeah solid state amps don't hold a candle to tube amps, not even close. I have a Peavey Triple X half stack that I got about 6 years ago. Love it, the clean is ok but it really shines in ultra to me.

Fender makes a bunch of tube combo amps that are good for what you're looking for. Just make sure you play it in person if you can before buying.

I have a Crat Palomino V-50 and I love it. I've had it for about 3 1/2 years now and I really wouldn't trade it for the world. I swapped the speakers out for two Celestion greenbacks about a year ago and that's gotta be one of the best choices I've ever made. The cleans are sparkly and crisp, but the overdrive channel (+ a DigiTech Bad Monkey) give me the perfect Marshall/Plexi overdrive tone.

On a side note; I played an ENGL Blackmore amp at my local guitar store yesterday. All I can say is holy **** what a great amp

I have a Fender Blues Deville. It's exactly the sound your after Tendrils, perfect for classic and surf rock. I went to see Coldplay a few years ago and they had about 5 of them on stage.

The only possible negative is that they are incredibly loud. Back when I was doing.a lot of gigs I could never have the volume above about 2. Which is.a real shame as tube amps sound much better at a louder volume. You want those tubes running hot for great tone!

I was looking at one of those a couple years ago but ended up staying put. Another fender amp I've been looking at is the Hot Rod Blues Jr. NOS 15W combo for a smaller practice amp I can keep in the family room. Anybody ever use one?

Musicians Friend has some free goodies if you buy a Hot Rod amp. They're giving away "premium" cable and messenger bags.

Anybody try out Orange amps? I've been seeing them more often at concerts over the past couple of years. Not quite as much as Fender or Marshall, but they're definitely easy to spot.

I really want to buy another guitar around the end of the year (Gretsch or Tele), but I also really want a tube amp. Decisions. The only problem I have right now is that my practice space is limited, so I can't splurge on a tube amp of any kind of size. But then I don't want to "settle" for a smaller/practice unit when I know I will still want a bigger tube down the line.
