Why do you play games online?

Just was verbally jousting with this guy over YouTube (Great Place to verbally joust.)

Anyway, basically he was saying that the whole purpose of multiplayer/online gaming is to talk trash to your opponent. I was a bit surprised by this.

If I am with my friends, sure I will talk a little just for fun, nothing mean spirited or malicious.

But, to me it is a sign that you are weak at the particular game you are playing. If you have to run your mouth, then you probably aren't very good. This usually proves true when I play online. Usually the loudest person is pretty bad when he is playing. I find this in games like Killzone 2 all the time.

So, why do you guys play? Thoughts?

I play games online because single player doesn't cut it for me anymore. So I voted to have fun. Doesn't hurt to talk a little trash here and there though.

I haven't played an Xbox 360 game online in over a year. I just don't care for it too much. However, I do very much enjoy racing NR 2003 online because it just makes it so much more fun to race against real people.

Re: Why do you play games online?

Having fun. The CPU can get predictable or there are simply some games that you need to laugh out loud about with somebody. Plus, modes may vary. While a sports game normally just has the actual game, something like Call of Duty has missions in single player and deathmatch in multiplayer.

Then there are games like Super Smash Brothers that, like I said, you need to be with somebody either literally or virtually and just laugh about some things. The way you killed somebody, the tendencies you have, the idiocy of falling off the edge, the talks amongst yourselves during a match... and overall it just works out better when you're playing a being of infinite capacity.

I actually normally don't play sports games online. People cheese too much or don't play at a pace of my liking (skipping cut scenes and such) and I like doing my franchises. I may try Blitz: The League II online, but I haven't gotten to it yet.

Online is great, but I hope they don't completely ditch co-op or head-to-head play with people on the same console like they have been lately. I really would have liked to play Pure in split-screen mode, but they only have online play unfortunately. It seems it's the way of the future and if that holds true, as long as they can make it as close to playing a neighboring opponent as possible, I suppose I'm up for it.

I don't play much online (prefer single player or local multiplayer), but when I do it's a combination of wanting to win and have fun. Playing with/against other humans online is a nice change of pace for me. Usually, I suck, though, especially in FPS and 3PS games.

I play online usually when I'm bored at night but I also do it to have fun rather then watching TV. So I would so that it is a combination of both, along with the fact that I always play with the same people.

Re: Why do you play games online?

When I play online it is because I want to have an enjoyable gaming experience with another person, whether they are a random or one of my friends. I mainly enjoy playing FPS games online because there are more people and because the gaming experience tends to be much better then that of playing a random in a sports game online. How can I find pleasure in a game where someone goes for it on 4th and forever, constantly abuses glitches, or someone that simply does not play the game like it is intended to be played like. So yeah, online gaming is fun when you have friends to play with or randoms to kill. However, I am also competitive by nature and always wish to do well...so sometimes it is not fun, at all.

For fun only. The moment I stop having fun and get frustrated, is usually the time I stop for the night.

[NOTE: I'm not talking about the random "that's bull****" comments in shooters, because as we all know, I'm a great shot, you're a great shot, and there's no way in hell I missed that guy or that other fool shot my dude.]

I do admit to having a great sense of joy though stopping cheesers in NHL or NCAA and having them quit on me, but since I'm usually listening to music or the news, I don't hear their rantings.

I'm also a firm user of the Player Reviews and Complaints offered by the online service, so if a guy uses glitch goals or glitches in shooters, brings the mozzarella, drives the wrong way, talks a lot of ****, is unsportsmanlike, quits early, etc...they ALWAYS get negative feedback and complaints filed.

Because it's fun to beat people instead of the computer. I never talk **** unless someone is talking to me and even then I only really start talking if they're annoying. I love beating people who talk **** though, I just played this guy who was talking about how he was gonna beat my *** and after I proceeded to go up by 20 he disconnected. It was hilarious.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

I don't really play sports games online becuase of all the cheese but I do play my closest friends and brothers. I play online basically because the cpu doesn't offer much of a challenge in sp modes. Although the cpu is getting tougher now days that's for sure.

I play COD online for the fun and excitement of playing agianst other people.

I don't play many games online, but when I do it's because the AI sucks and I've no other option (think UFC Undisputed 2009).
