When I was in college and high school (at least in the summer) I did not mind the late starts as I was usually in bed at 3 or later. Not anymore though. Now I'm in bed between 10 and 11 most nights so when the Red Sox are on the West Coast or the Patriots on SNF or MNF I usually don't see the end. The football games are particularly brutal because everything is longer (commercials and halftime) and it drives me insane. If the games were on at 5 or 6 I don't think it would bother me as much.

Re: East coasters and watching sports
I remember when I flew out to Arizona back in May and the day we got out there was the same day as Game 7 of the Lakers-Rockets series and it was like 3 in the afternoon when it went off and once it was over, I pretty much had nothing to do after that lol. It was the samething with Raw too; East Coast, it goes off @ 11:05, after that I can watch Martin reruns on TV1. West Coast, it goes off @ 8 and I still felt like that was early as hell because I was used to going to sleep once games went off.
Long story short, that West Coast time was messing my mind up because everything went off too early for me.#RespectTheCultureComment

Good for late night, but worse for football IMO. 9 and 10 AM....too early for football"You can not ensure success, but you can deserve it." - John Quincy Adams

Re: East coasters and watching sports
For me, next to the weather, this is the worst part of moving from Cali to Texas.
A's home games don't start until 9:00, which means they run to midnight, which means I don't watch them.
The absolute worst is for MLB and NBA playoffs. Often times these games have 9:30 or 10:00 start times. I couldn't imagine living futher east and having to stay up until 1:00 or 2:00 to catch the end of a non-overtime/extra inning game.
I remember reading an article in which the author said that many young Yankee fans never get to see one of the greatest closers and post season pitchers pitch because it's almost always well after midnight there when he takes the mound in October.
I preferred football in Cali too. Wake up, lay on the couch and watch pre game from 9-10 and then watch football from 10-4 and still have several hours left in your day to do something. Also the Sunday night game was over before bed time.
The one other thing I do enjoy though is prime time TV here in Texas, being in the "Central" we get stuff an hour earlier than both the West and East Coast (8-7 central).Comment

Re: East coasters and watching sports
It doesn't bother me at all. There are very few games that start late night that are must-see TV for me. If they are I'll DVR them and watch them the next day.
All my favorite teams are in the EST and the only WC games/teams I watch regularly are in the NBA so I don't miss much. I'll watch the first half of the late NBA games and go to bed, I'm not going to stress about missing the end of a regular season NBA game.Sports aren't that important to me at this point in my life.
In college it was awesome though, having something good on TV to watch until 1-2am."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Maybe it's just me but even if I don't know the result...I can't get caught up in a replay/DVR of a game.Comment

Re: East coasters and watching sports
I think Central and Mountain are the best time zones for sports, having been in the Eastern my whole life I've pretty much adjusted and kind of look forward to the west coast trips for the Tigers and Pistons. As a kid I would try to stay as late as possible laying in bed listening to George Blaha call hoops and Harwell and Carey call the Tigers action. Fond memories I wouldn't have if I lived out west.Comment

Re: East coasters and watching sports
I knew I was going to say this but you West Coasters are spoiled.
If you have time shifting on your TV package, almost all of the shows run between 5-7. By the time I got home from work, PTI/ATH was already in my DVR and all East Coast sport games had already started. All the late night talk shows (except Conan) ended by 10:35.
I still can't get over the fact the Canucks don't start their home games until 10pm out here. I'm going to have trouble staying up for the OT playoff games.Comment

Re: East coasters and watching sports
I stay up late anyways, so it wouldn't bother me, but it'd depend on the job I had. It's actually one of the weird things about potentially moving out of CA. When I went to the midwest on a trip a couple years ago, start times tripped the hell outta me. It was 9:30pm when West Coast games got started. So weird.
Of course, if I got a job good enough to move to the midwest or East, I'm sure I wouldn't be able to stay up so late.Comment

Re: East coasters and watching sports
I love being on the west coast for sports. I'd much rather get up early to catch a game then have to stay up late to watch a game, especially if I have to work the next day. It's nice too that most games on the west coast end around 9ish which still gives me time to head out on the town on weekends if I want.Comment

Re: East coasters and watching sports
I've lived on the east coast my whole life so it doesn't bother me. Only time I have an issue is RedSox west coast road trips. I must say you guys on the west are lucky. Catch a game have it end by 8 and have the rest of the night free must be nice.Comment

Unlike TV shows, sports isn't the type of thing where you can DVR it and than just watch it 3-4 days later. It's too hard to ignore the scores.
I know this sounds silly, but as a huge TV and Sports fan, the 3 hour difference is one of the things I miss the most about living on the West Coast.Comment
