    Re: OS Pups Thread!

Unfortunately, I too have a sad story to tell.

A few weeks ago my German Shepherd Max collapsed and I ended up taking him to the ER vet. Turned out he had a tumor on his spleen that ruptured and needed surgery. They ended up taking the spleen out, cleaning the area and giving him a blood transfusion as he lost 3-4 liters of blood internally. Fortunately the surgery went well and right now he is a happy and energetic dog! Last night we went on a 3 mile walk and once we got back home he wanted to play some more.

For the bad news, the biopsy came back as cancer and he has hemangiosarcoma. This is a highly active form of cancer and he has 2-5 months to live. I can do chemo but they may only extend his life 2-4 months. I'm still looking into this with a few different vets but right now I feel demoralized. He's almost 9 now, I've had him since he was 6 weeks and me and him are basically tied at the hip. Everyday I have with him I will try to make it count and every weekend I want to plan something nice with him. I want to be positive and strong but it is hard knowing in the back of my mind that he will collapse soon again.

Good luck to Rocky tomorrow LowerWolf! Hopefully everything goes well as does his recovery.

Sorry to hear about your best buds guys. Hang in there and give all your love, will be praying for you and pup.

For me, got some good news. We're bringing in a new puppy and she'll be here next month to keep Buko busy.

We haven't decided a name yet but Muffin, Phoebe and Yin Yin (her face is kinda like a yin yang symbol). We weren't expecting to get another dog but Buko's breeder had a French Bulldog that had 5 pups and we couldn't resist

I feel for you guys. I can't even imagine seeing Gemma go through any pain - much less what you guys are going through.

LowerWolf, hope everything goes well with Rocky's surgery and hopefully the cancer hasn't spread and he'll be fine afterward.

Altimus, we went through pretty much the exact same thing with my sister's black lab (was really our black lab as our mom adopted him before either of us moved out and my sister took him when she moved out). My sister came home one day to find him collapsed in her bathroom which led to a laparotomy, splenectomy, and hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. As you said, it is a very aggressive form of cancer so my sister ended up not pursuing chemo and just enjoying the time she had left with him. Dakota lived just over 7 months from the time of his diagnosis and seemed perfectly fine until the last 10 days or so.

                Re: OS Pups Thread!

I started agility with my pup Winnie 6 months ago or so. She's finally moved up enough to start running full courses in class. This was her from last night. I hope as we keep doing it she'll get faster. She's pretty pokey out there but this was about 8:30 last night after a full day at dog camp, so she was pooped. Doing agility was something I always enjoyed doing with my other dogs when they were younger. Really helps build a bond with the pup and it really reinforces obedience training as well.

For anyone in the New England area, I am very excited to say I just accepted a position at Burlington Emergency and Veterinary Specialists.

Hope all the OS pups continue to do well. I can't wait till I reach a point in my life that I can have a dog again.

Rocky is home from the amputation. It's going to be a rough few days/week while he recovers, but he'll be able to run and play again when it's all done.

Edit: He's actually done really well so far. The recovery from the amputation has gone a lot better than it did after the biopsy. He was up and hopping around the next day, and seems to feel pretty good. One more week until the stitches come out and he can start being active again.

We wound up going to Blue Pearl yesterday to begin Rocky's chemo. Pretty swanky place and everybody there was great. I came away impressed. Thanks for the recommendation.

Last night took Max outside and after we came back in he lay down by the door which he never does. He seemed exhausted, but after 30 minutes he seemed okay again. This morning, took him out and same thing so I ended up taking him to the vet. They said his blood sugar is low and he is bleeding in the abdomen again and there is nothing I can do. They said luckily it wasn't the heart or lungs. For now they said to take him home, normal diet but no more walks or light walks.

I feel the end is coming. I've never gone through this before but this is very difficult.

Here is a picture from a few days ago.
