        My family likes big dogs

Thor (11/8/1992 - 5/8/2005), A Newfoundland. I think this pic was taken in the summer of '03.

        Thor2.jpg

This is one of my favorit pictures from when I was living at home in December, 06. I came downstairs one morning and found Mocha (Chocolate Lab), Dakota (Black Lab) and Vito (cat) all chilling on my mom's bed.

        bed_party_121506.jpg

We just had to put Mocha down a couple months ago. She was only 9. We got here back in '01 from the pet store my sister worked at at the time (She was almost certainly a puppy mill dog) And she had hip dysplasia. She developed Cushings Diseas about a year ago and just started going rapidly downhill around the beginning of June. She just kept getting weaker and weaker until she couldn't even stand on her own.

We rescued Dakota from a Lab rescue group when he was 2 in August, 05. He was 1 of 3 labs dumped in a shelter by a family from Ohio when they moved and decided not to take the dogs. He's about as dumb as they get, a coward, and has major abandonment issues. My sister took him when she moved out.

My sister brought Vito home in April 06 when he was 3 weeks old after he was abandoned at a hair salon across the stree from the vet where she works.

Finally, here is a picture I took of my mom's 16 month old Newfoundland, Bruno, a couple weeks ago. He had surgery to correct a luxating patella and torn tendon and I took this picture while we were bringing him home from getting his staples out. He will not be still in my mom's Dodge Durango and kept crawling around and getting himself tangled in the seatbelts for the 3rd row of seats.

Burgh, I'm curious, I have been interested in New Foundland dogs but I know they are big and Slobber a lot. Are they high Matienance? or are they good to own?

The main thing with Newfies is that their thick coats need regular brushing. As for the slobbering, it varies. Bruno slobbers some but Thor really only slobbered if someone said "cheese" or "pig ear" (his 2 favorite treats). They can be a bit hyper as puppies (though that could be said for any breed of dog), but once they're adults they're perfectly content to just lay around. In fact, Thor took this to an extreme. He was the laziest dog in the world and once he got to be 3 or so years old, you could hardly even get him to play. I liked to say he was doing his never ending Garfield the cat impression as all he did was eat and sleep. They're also very social and love to be around people and are very good around small children. They're also smart and easy to train. Bruno apparently learned to ring bells hung from the doorknob when he had to go out within about 2 weeks of bringing him home.

This is Roxy. She's 5 and enjoys tennis balls.

This is Ruby. She's 11 and enjoys chewing bones. She has a giant lump in her belly and the vet guy told us to save our money because she probably won't be around long enough to justify yearly vaccinations. So, she's on a clock. And she was the dog of my childhood. And I will be crushed when she's gone.

Kind of an old photo (couple of years old)...lost the boxer last summer and the lab is going downhill fast (13 y.o.). They were my "first borns" before we actually had a kid. Time flies...
