    Re: OS Pups Thread!

Do you guys brush your dogs' teeth? Our vet is telling me I need to brush Emmett's teeth every day or he'll risk having them pulled. It's so difficult to brush them, he's so small and it's hard to restrain him & open his mouth to do it, like I need a bonus arm to get the job done.

    Would dental treats work?

I can't recall if I posted these or not. A few pictures of our Golden named Cosmo. He's going to be 2 in May. He's really a wonderful dog. Very well behaved.

Oddly enough, he doesn't shed as much as some Golden's (my in-laws have them). By accident, we found out that a certain type of food helped him. Our breeder fed him Iam's puppy food and suggested we do the same so we didn't change his food once we got him. After a few months, his stomach couldn't handle it anymore. He had some serious diarrhea (lucky it was always outside or on the tile...never on the carpet). Our vet suggested Hill's Science Diet i/d. He likes it, no more diarrhea, his coat feels softer and he doesn't shed as much as he used to.

                Re: OS Pups Thread!

Thanks guys! I can't stress enough how great of a dog he is (and smart). I had a cocker spaniel growing up who was good, but not this good. When I got married my wife wanted a Golden as that's what she grew up with. Long story, short...we built a new house and 4 months later we got him. I was concerned because I didn't know if he would tear apart a brand new house and chew baseboards, cabinets, drywall, furniture etc...while we were at work and he was alone. We gave him a small space in the kitchen to start and then gave him more and more. It didn't take long before he had full roam of the house and hasn't damaged anything.

Any bad day at work is completely gone the minute I get home and am greeted by him.

Just an FYI: Science Diet is rated pretty low for dog food. There really isn't actually any real meat in it only Chicken By Product meal which is basically the scraps of the chicken (feet, beaks etc...) ground up.

If it is working for you, you may not want to change but just know there are better foods out there for the same price or cheaper.

We've tried a few other's and he's had issues with all of them. We were told Blue Buffalo is good and supposedly rated higher, but he had severe diarrhea with it. Even worse than the Iam's we were feeding him from the breeder.

When he first had stomach issues, we were told to try just plain chicken and rice. He still had issues so I thought he might have a bad reaction to chicken.

What foods do you recommend? I'm always willing to try something different if it's better for him.

When you switch foods are you just going straight to the next food or are you mixing it in with the old food to transition? My brother has a weekend job selling Blue Buffalo, great food but damn expensive.

I would try using a limited ingredient food that has ingredients that your pup has never eaten just in case it is a food allergy. (i.e. Get one without chicken or rice). We did the same to our pup a while back when we thought he had a food allergy. Turned out it wasn't ( it was EPI but that is a different story) but he liked the food so we kept him on it anyway.

                        We feed him this:
                        .

But they also have Sweet Potato and Venison, Duck and Potato and Salmon and Sweet Potato that would work for you as well. If you look at the ingredient list you will see no by-products. The products are readily available at Petco. Here is their website: http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/dog...s/allergy.html

We tried slowly making the transition the last time we changed. Nothing seemed to agree with him aside from the Science Diet i/d. We had read good things about Blue Buffalo, but it just didn't seem to agree with him. Still not sure why...we just went with what the vet suggested and it worked so we stuck with it. Hearing that it's not that good for him, has me thinking of alternatives.

Our Vet suggested Science Diet almost 4 yrs ago for our English Springer Spaniel and we haven't looked back since. No problems or issues whatsoever.

No matter how much exercise he did, or how much we limited his diet, my dog would not shed any weight. The boarding place that we bring him to when we go out of town recommended this one for him, and since using it, he's trimmed down, and is still full of energy. I highly recommend it.
