    The disturbing trend at OS

For all of the "old timers" on this site like me, this isn't exactly a new trend, but it is definitely becoming more prevalent on every single forum every year.

There is a disturbing pattern that occurs with every single game that is released.

    1. Particular game forum is overloaded with folks dying to get game.

    2. Multiple posts by OSers on early impressions, how game will be greatest ever, how they are going hunting for game, etc.

    3. Game is released, OSers create 97 different leagues for game, declare game is greatest they have ever played, demand all OSers get the game or you'll be missing out, etc.

    4. TWO WEEKS LATER (or less)....OSers have put together a "Why don't the game developers put some effort in?" and a "Don't put up with this, boycott Joe Blow Games to show your anger towards this piece of crap game!" threads that have now received 387 responses in just over a day.

    5. OSers follow up the hate posts with 22 different "Well I turned in game today" or "I sold my game for 20 bucks on ebay and said goodbye" melodramatic posts which have received 495 responses in just over 30 minutes.

    6. OSers travel like locusts from former "crap game" forum to new "this game is going to revolutionize the industry!!!" forum and the whole horrific episode repeats itself.

The element has always been there going back to 2001/2002, but it just feels like this is becoming the standard now at OS and it's pretty sad.

And then we wonder why EVERY game developer and not just a few are not clamoring to come to OS and share their game expertise.

People hang on the negatives and completely forget about positives. I think that's the way the world is becoming now. Instead of being grateful, it's about questioning why everything isn't perfect for me.

I think it all comes down to the younger gen gamers, mostly kids in thier teens. Kids who didn't grow up with NES, SNES and SEGA games where the game you bought, is the game you got. Meaning no patches and I think most importantly, the internet wasn't widely available, so it didn't provide a medium for people to have thier minds polluted by people who will never be happy with a game no matter what was included or not included in it. I'm almost 30 years old and the level of entitlement some of the younger crowd thinks they deserve has gone completely nuclear in the past 3-4 years. I'm at the point now where I don't even look at the threads titled; this needs to patched or why isn't _____ in the game or my favorite, I'm trading in the game so I want everyone to know I'm trading in the game. Just frustrates the living hell out of me sometimes. [/rant]

I gotta agree with this one million percent. This not only applies to OS (gaming forums) but to general life as well. We're always looking at the negatives, when in reality, we should be grateful for the positives.

Re: The disturbing trend at OS

I make no excuses for the trends of new members, or even old members acting like new members.

                  --however--

I'd like to put some of the blame on the shoulders of the game companies. Not the developers, the companies. They insist on ONE team on a ONE year cycle every year. They also insist on a hype machine that dwarfs anything we've seen in years past. This leads to a lot of hype for a game that is incomplete and barely working on release.

There is too much of a dynamic difference between promise and delivery in sports games. I know, that is the cold hard reality of sports games, but they cost 60 bucks just like Call of Duty and Rock Band, and those games come out polished to a spit shine.

Not equivalent circumstances, but the customer is only concerned with results. If the developers don't want to be victims of their companies' policies and practices, they need to be more forthcoming with their situation, and be honest with the fans about what they're getting, and when they're getting it.

But we know that will only go so far. A company will not allow a dev to say "guys, on release day, there will be no online. We didn't have time to get it working, but it'll be patched in by ____". Or "guys, this game is going to play like unrealistic trash on release, but the patch will be like night and day, and this is why".

That's the truth, but they aren't allowed to say it. The best we can hope for is "yeah, we didn't have time for that, so we screwed it up trying to get it done. Our apologies, we'll do a better job next year".

Either sports games are going to cost less, people are going to stop buying them on release, or people are going to buy them on release, but make up the difference by giving these dudes an earful.

Re: The disturbing trend at OS

The new TOS should hopefully cleanse some of the idiotic posters. More so, I believe, is an impatient and unthankful generation.

Prime example is with MLB The Show; the devs made the game where you couldn't win a season 162-0 on the hardest level and made it life-like with comebacks and a consequence if you leave [x player] in too long or don't use [y player] to come off the bench as a pinch-hitter/defensive-sub you have an increased possibility to get burned. It really forces the user to play the game with a MLB manager's mind and not try to pad stats. Hence, little 12-15 year olds (and even older...) were agitated and screaming that they couldn't win in blowouts like they used to.

I don't like the trend of having to need patches to fix issues; if anybody remembers the Sonic & Knuckles series on SEGA, it still seems when I pick up and play it that there are barely any issues at all with that game, like it's nearly perfect. Additionally, it wasn't built on a great gaming system that allows lots of content to built but rather the lowly Genesis and it still to this day has amazing graphics, features, etc. yet is also challenging enough to beat the entire game.

Comparing the games of yester-year to today's game I say both sides have credible arguments; the need to produce patches to fix game issues (some, like with Madden being pre-meditated before the game even ships...) while games in my youth couldn't be patched and in most cases didn't need to be; on the other hand the games of today are so much more advanced and contain more content so maybe there's not enough time to do a thorough QA test. My thoughts is to always check the multiple reviews before one buys a game - the buyer beware cliche' definately is appropriate.

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

Re: The disturbing trend at OS

I think both us the games and the game dev's are both at fault here.

A lot of games nowadays hype themselves up big time, promising things to be fixed from previous years, promising big changedsgamebreaking features. Now in some games this holds true. But the majority of next-gen sports game this hasnt been the case. We are often let down when the same things have not been fixed.

When you first buy a game your excited to play it and you might not notice faults in the game. Thats how I am. When I first popped in Madden I thought it was great. But after playing it for a few weeks and getting into franchise thats when you start noticing things that are broken in a game. Which is why initial impressions are always good and then after people play the game more the hype goes away and you notice things you don't like in it.

I think developers should either not charge $60 for a game that is half-assed, or spend more time make it or expanding the team and put a better product on the shelves. I would have no problem waiting 2 years for a nice well developed game worth $60 ala Modern Warfare 2.

Us the consumer should realize it is just a game and not every game will be perfect. A perfect game to one guy is broken to the next. We should just enjoy the game and not expect every thing you see on Sundays to be in Madden. But Madden developers shouldnt say, "Everything you see on Sundays is in this game." That leads the consumer on and when you say things like that you have to be prepared to be criticized when it isn't the truth.

Not picking on Madden here I think Madden 10 is worlds better then 09 and am still playing it, but thought it would be a good example because its the most popular game here at OS.

THE clearest example I have seen on OS, although, I'm kind of new compared to some of you guys.

Unless the game is free, I don't see why anyone should be grateful.

I blame folks in their late 20s-early 40s and game companies who create shoddy products that require patches and hype up their games to no end.
