30 degrees? It gets below 30 degrees here and in a lot of Southern cities all the time in the winter. It got down to 26 last night and 25 the night before. Our average January low is in the mid-20s. Heck, even Tallahassee, Florida averages 35 days per year in which temperatures fall below freezing.
Southern cities don't have the same quantity of snow removal equipment (especially once you get into Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and South Texas), so 2" can be a pretty big deal when the roads aren't salted or plowed.
Around here, the primary and some secondary roads are plowed and salted, but they don't usually ever plow the roads out in front of my house in our neighborhood. Even back in 2000 when we saw over 12" of snow on January 25th-26th (Raleigh, NC saw over two feet of snow, so I kind of got screwed a bit by that one!). The snow was still on our road out in front of the house and it hadn't melted since it was so cold. Finally, it melted away a few days later, but the snowplows never came!
At the same time, I laugh whenever people in Chicago are complaining about a 100-degree head wave and it makes national headlines about how people are being to the hospital and such. We experience those type of temperatures almost every day in the summertime, it seems, so it's normal for us. (I still hate summer here, though; it's too hot!)

You don't even need to go that far south. Northern Arkansas has major issues when it snows or when there is ice all over the place.
And you have air conditioning, right? I suppose this could have some to do with it. I know some people in Florida don't have heat, so when they get into the 20s at night (which seems to happen on occasion), it's a really big deal (not to mention that it kills crops).
I was more talking about the heat indexes than the actual ambient temperature. Our peak average temperature is 89, but we usually several upper 90s here from my experience (though we seem to have experienced fewer of these over the last few years) and with the oppressive humidity that we in the South experience daily, it makes the heat much worse than the temperature indicates.
I definitely overexagerated a bit, but all I'm saying is that those in the North make fun of Southerners' making a big deal of snowfall when we could make the same arguments about Northerners going crazy over temperatures in the 80s and 90s during the summer.
That said, I don't much like the weather here. There's some interesting weather phenomena, like the Appalachian Wedge which results in some areas of NC being referred to as the "freezing rain capital of the world", but I'd much rather live further up North where it's colder and snowier. I hate the whole stupid concept of "heat index" and "wind chill". If it's hot, it's hot. Just because the relative humidity is high doesn't mean it's like 100+ degrees. It's 90 with high humidity which makes things sticky and you sweat. Deal with it.
Just like in the cold. When it's four degrees in Minnesota. It's pretty damn cold. The wind chill of -18 is irrelevant. Your *** will get frostbite if you shovel without sleeves, gloves, or a coat for more than 20 minutes. Hell, I had partial frostbite last year.
I look at those numbers as some sort of drug for meteorologists. They get to scare or excite the populace by saying crap like "well folks, it's eight degrees as the low tonight...but it FEELS like six below. Be EXTRA CAREFUL! I dont have an air conditioner and I live just south of Atlanta, so the summer time can be pretty brutal. Sometimes when I turn on a fan all it does is blow hot air on me. I have gotten so used to sleeping with a fan on that I do it even in the winter...I just point it in the other direction. I dont see how some people sleep in dead silence, I gotta have a fan on.Comment

I guess I got the best of both worlds. I live in Alaska right now due to being in the military so I know what cold and snow is and Im from Texas, lived there for 20 years so I know what hot and humidity is.MLB: Texas Rangers
