Re: Why is proper grammar dying on the internet?
I will give you that. Mostly just how to use them. We had questions with them on the test; it was pretty hard to figure out which ones were wrong and which ones were right. I think I did OK, but when I got the test back it doesn't show you what questions you got wrong. It only showed a scale score.Comment

Re: Why is proper grammar dying on the internet?
Reading these message boards along with others it has became painfully clear that proper English grammar is going the way of the Dodo bird. I have found this to be especially true amongst younger posters (as in born after 1990) but that is not to say it is exclusive to that generation.
So I need to ask what is so hard about speaking, or well typing in proper English when communicating with others?
By the way, your nick reminds me of an urban dictionary entry, though I dare imagine what yours might imply.Last edited by Valdarez; 12-12-2009, 04:17 PM.Comment

Re: Why is proper grammar dying on the internet?
Rule 4. Use the semicolon to separate units of a series when one or more of the units contain commas.
Example: This conference has people who have come from Boise, Idaho; Los Angeles, California; and Nashville, Tennessee.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: Why is proper grammar dying on the internet?
The one that pisses me off to no end is when people misspell the word definitely. People have a stupid habit of putting the letter A in there and saying definately. How can that possibly look correct? The funny thing is, if you do a search on this very forum of the incorrect spelling you will get thousands and thousands of results. Despicable.Comment

Haha well I can't list all of the rules for using "whom," but I know that I use it appropriately when the time calls for choosing "who" or "whom" in a sentence.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

You don't need to dabble with commas and stuff if you construct your sentence with words that deliberately avoid confusion.Comment

Only lately, I've replaced "That's what she said" with "Story of my life." As long as people understand you're making the substitution, it makes it that much funnier.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: Why is proper grammar dying on the internet?
I was pointing out how your use of it was incorrect and then chose the rule that best explains how or when you'd use it to break up a sentence.
Though, like bgeno, I didn't know Rule 3. That list is interesting because if you really read each rule, there are basically only two rules. Rule 1, 2, 3 and 5 are the same thing: two sentences joined together to complete a single thought. Rule 4 is the rule about lists (that Blzer mentioned earlier).
I also don't understand why the need for a Rule 2 and Rule 3. It's the same thing. All the writer had to say is:
"It is preferable to use a semicolon before introductory words such as namely, however, therefore, that is, i.e., for example, e.g., or for instance when they introduce a complete sentence. Use a comma or semicolon when they introduce a list following a complete sentence. It is also preferable to use a comma after the introductory word.""It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Why is proper grammar dying on the internet?
I'd like to meet a MASTER GRAMMAR. Haha.
Seriously, I do. I doubt that anyone can remember every rule of the English language without some help. I always have my Elements of Style book with me when I'm writing. I would expect that an editor always has whatever book or notes he/she may need as well.
It's like Law. No lawyer knows every rule by heart. But, a good lawyer knows where to find the rule and I would expect that good writers know where to correct a potential mistake - that or they hire an editor to do it for them."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Since this is a video game messageboard I really don't care. I post so fast I know I make errors."What I would like for every football team to do that we play is to sit there and say, I hate playing against these guys." -Nick SabanComment
