    Re: Some people

elgreazy, my dad told me a story similar to the second one you told. He was in San Diego for business and decided to get some fried chicken. He had some leftover so he's walking back to wherever he was going and he passes a homeless guy (I think he said it was a whole bunch of homeless people). My dad figures he won't finish up what he has, so he gives the leftover chicken to the homeless man. The homeless man thanks him and then goes off to share the chicken with his fellow homeless people.

I thought that was very cool of both my dad and the homeless man. Some people honestly just are down on their luck. It's a shame we have scumbags trying to capitalize on that image.

When I was in High School I used to work on the NYS thru-way sellings sunglasses at rest stops. well, every once and awhile we would get these hippies who would get drive from rest stop to the next with the money they pan handled.

I'm a sucker for giving out money. It makes me feel like i've done something good. And if it is a scam, they'll pay for it in their own time.

I work in "da hood" so I see this kind of stuff literally daily. Our business is a block over from the homeless shelter and the cafeteria where they can eat free. Needless to say I get at least 1 in my work a day begging for money.

I have enough of these stories to fill 10 pages. But I will share something a little different that is going on around here.

There is this trend where guys get laided off from the oilfield here. But instead of looking for work they want to just continue collecting unemployment. So they have these papers that they must fill out when ever showing the looking for work. They need to get business owners to write down who they are, position, and why they not hiring.

So instead of coming in asking for a application or if we are hiring. They come in and ask if I can fill out this paper for them. So normally what I been doing lately is just laying into these lazy people. I make them listen to my rant for 30 mins how I am working and they need to do the same. I am not signing your paper so you can go sit on the corner and drink yourself stupid at 8am. My taxes are NOT going to pay your way so you can do nothing. Lazy, no good people want a free ride in life just irk me up the wall.

I don't get the reason for you thinking it was about "being cool" are not. It is about how these low lifes come in asking for a hand out. If you expect me to give you more than what we have already given, like Stewart has touched on. Then expect to get a angry tax payer from time to time. I am sorry I am not going to hold my tongue and watch these people abuse the system. I will say my peace about what they are doing to this country.

The simple fact is these people grow up using the system to do NOTHING. Telling these people what they are doing to the working american is not about being cool. It is about being "real" with them.

I don't appreciate them using my tax dollars in manner to benefit themselves. but judging by your response, maybe i should be giving you a speaking to also.

Theres a guy always standing outside the BART entrance outside my work with a cup for coins..

normally I'd just ignore him as he asks for change... but this guy only has one eye, and he choose NOT to wear his eye patch, so you can see the hole where his other eye should be...

yea, theres skin there...but its sunken in and...still gross...plus he looks all sick and old...im sure he gets coins just for playing the sympathy card to PERFECTION.
                  not from me though...

only thing ill do is occsaionally feed a homeless...(if they act cool, and not like BUMS)

I THINK he was probably talking about the fact that you said you worked in "Da Hood"

when saying "the hood", or a bad neighborhood, would have probably worked just as well.

throwing "ebonics" on it just made it seem like poor taste, especially given the vernacular used throughout your other paragraphs.

He looks at us and probably thought we were easy targets, so as we're walking, talking, laughing on our way to my friend's car, I guess he slowly gets up and starts trailing us. We get to the car and I get into shotgun, and my friend the driver just got a new CD and wanted to put it in, so he was taking off the shrink wrap. I look to my right and see the homeless guy slowly barging at us, and I go, "Uh, Matt... drive... now." He keeps saying, "Hold on, I almost got it." And I just keep going, "Drive, drive right now!"

When he puts in the CD and he turns on the engine, the homeless guy knocks loudly on my window and freaks the **** out of me. My friend goes, "... Oh," and rolls down the window, and I simply have to lean back and turn my head away as the guy leans inside the car, arms leaning into the car and everything. He says, "'Scuse me sirs, I'm looking to get one of those plasma screens inside. You wouldn't happen to have any sort of loose change on you, would'yas?" They all do that "Uh, sorry... no," thing as I'm just silent and not even looking. He leans a bit further into the car and says, "Please? Anything would help me get that for my family." Then I just reach into my pocket and take out about 80 cents or so and put them in his hands that are right next to mine, because I don't think he would have left otherwise. He smiles at me and says, "Thank you, kind sir," and does a light double-slap on my cheek as he finally leaves.

My friend gave me a dollar later, apologizing for never leaving earlier.
The cashier at Best Buy is going to be pissed when he walks in with 2 grand in change and they have to count it.

If thats the case then that is way off base. I am in Louisiana and people say things like "Dem Saints", "Who Dat", "Da shotgun is banging" etc etc lol. WOW is all I can say if that was looked at in "poor taste".

                          Re: Some people

I've had several people try and run a scam on me. Usually you can see right through it, but a foolproof way to figure it out is to just tell them you will buy the food/gas/etc. for them. If they really need what they are asking for, they accept your charity and thank you for it. Makes you feel good to help someone. BUT... It always happened to me near a McDonalds on campus. The guys would be like "you got any spare money for some food, I'm so hungry." So I'd say, "come on in, I'll buy you some food." At least 80% of the time, they'd be like "I don't like McDonalds, or if you can just give me the money I'll get something a little later, or some other lame excuse.

I will go out of my way to help these people and buy them something to eat if they are hungry, but when they give me an excuse (and it's always an awful excuse), I just tell them they should be ashamed of what they are doing to people, that they are basically just stealing.

To be honest, I cringed when you posted the words "Da Hood," especially in the context of your statement. When you say things like "Da Hood" or "Homies/Homedogs" or A group of "brothas" when the rest of your story contains no other ebonics sounds very Kramer-esque. Just sayin'

Wow.......I just don't get it. I am just saying. Ohhh and where I work is DA HOOD, not THE HOOD. I am talking, I see prostitutes, drugged out homeless guys, fights in the middle of the street, etc all the time. I am not talking oh once a week, I am meaning 2 to 3 times a day. So if DA throws you off that much, I truly don't know what to say. People I know around here would not have any issue with that.

I disagree, he said nothing offensive.

                                moving forward:

When I used to work in NY it would happen all the time. same stuff. Dude is like I need money to fix my car and get me and my sister to Iowa.

Occasionally if I have some change, Ill give it up. I wont give like 10 bucks or anything crazy.

whats always funny is most of the time Ill give them some change, and then all the way to work i will be putting the peices together in my head like wtf, if his car is broke, ok but why does he need to stand in the middle of the street and ask for change, even if I was stuck out of town and my car broke, and I didn't have any money, I would end up begging for change, I would ask the auto place if I could like work it off or something.
