Tell your loved ones you love them

Today was a very stressful day. I don't know how many are aware of the school shooting that took place at Deer Creek Middle School in Littleton, Colo., but it happened today just as school was released for the day.

A single gunman struck two students, thankfully none of the injuries were life-threatening. A teacher tackled the gunman and with the aid of a bus driver, were able to hold him down until the authorities showed up.

My wife teaches at Deer Creek Middle School. She was able to fire off a quick text message to let me know she was safe and that put my mind at ease. But, I still couldn't help think about the worst-case scenarios and just how bad, and deadly, this shooting could have been.

I'm just thankful that I make sure to every night tell my wife that I love her and give her a hug and kiss goodnight, as I usually don't see her in the mornings as she leaves for school before I am awake. She'll often leave me notes or voicemails to tell me she loves me. They seem like such trivial things, but when something of this magnitude happens, it just makes you step back and really appreciate the special bond you share with someone.

I love my wife very much. She was very brave, helping her group of children that were staying after school to complete an assignment to stay calm and not panic, even though there was chaos all around them.

I know I'll be giving my wife extra attention and whatever support she needs during this difficult time. I hope that no one has to go through this kind of ordeal. We never know what tomorrow will bring, so please, don't forget to tell your loved ones that you love and care about them.

Glad your wife is ok bro. I live in Boulder so I'm not too far away from you.

Senseless things like this are hard to comprehend sometimes. It's strange to think about how you could be here one second, but gone the next.

    Man knows not his time.

Littleton? The same town as Columbine again?

Glad you and yours are OK.

Wow, man. I am happy to hear that she is fine. Great reminder to all of us to never take those you love for granted. It hits close to home for all of us to know that an OSer has come face to face with such a crisis. Thanks so much for sharing this with us all.

Yeah only 3 miles away from Columbine, too.

Apparently the shooter, 32, attended Deer Creek in the early 90's. According to his dad he had dropped out of high school and said that for the past 1-2 years his son had been hearing "voices" and was "answering them." The shooter wanted to get medical help but couldn't afford it, again, according to the father.

I'm damn tired of these random shootings taken place in our society. There's too many of these things happening nowadays. Why are there so many of these? In Littleton too, they don't need another mass shooting. Glad someone tackled the POS.

I know the teacher that tackled the shooter. He works on my wife's "team" (at the school they have teams of 3-4 teachers, one for every subject). He's a good guy and I guess his martial arts training paid off.

What a brave act by that teacher. I've never been in a hostage type of situation, and I know they tell you to keep control and let the professionals do their jobs (the police, SWAT, whoever shows up), but I don't know if I'd let my fate rest in the hands of the crazy person with the gun. If I had a real opportunity, I think I'd go after the gunman just like that teacher. Obviously, if there was no way I could do it, I wouldn't attempt it. But if it's life and death, me versus some other guy... I'm winning. I'm not losing that fight.

Great job by the teacher and bus driver. Everyday heroes. Give those employees a raise!

I love seeing this happen more often, You have to attack these SOB's, it's either that or your life. Most of these people aren't even that well trained with a gun, anyone can fire an UZI or a sawed off shotgun and hit you at close distance. All these freaks are are *****'s, if only someone would have jumped on the columbine killers and Cho when he went on his rampage. I'm glad your wife is fine man, I can't believe kids had to see that, and two of their classmates get shot, what the hell is wrong with people, The shooter said he heard voices, so you shoot up a middle school?

No doubt man, I'm not hiding under a desk and wait to be shot. You have to act, Problem is peoples brains lock up when they are afraid and they can't move, you have to take action in to your hands. These lunatics can't take on a whole classrom of people throwing books and chairs or whatever at them.

I agree...depends on the situation though (if a gunman's contained, let the cops do their job), but if a guy has guns aimed at a bunch of kids and I have an opening I think I'd give it a shot. Not sure I'd want to live knowing I could have saved the lives of 5 kids but I decided not to risk it.

Obviously you don't rush the guy if he's pointing the gun right at you, that's stupid and basically suicide, but usually there's a good time when he's not watching you and you could take him down.

Re: Tell your loved ones you love them

You want to know why there are so many shootings ? Because are soceity is flooded with guns. Access to guns is way too easy here. Also security is way too low at schools in small towns.

In Chicago you have police patrolling the outside of every school and you have police patrolling the inside of schools, along with metal detectors at every door.

But try to do that to a school in the suburbs or small town and you will have parents screaming about rights violated. Anyway I am just glad only 2 kids got hit. With that type of gun he had, he could have easily hit 20 or more.

Messed up times we live in.
