Re: Tell your loved ones you love them

I've been near a school shooting myself. Had a classmate 20 feet from me just outside a locker room I was in take a bullet in the neck. He just happened to leave the locker room just before I was going to. It easily could've been me or any of my other friends walking out of that door.

These situations can really remind is what's important eh? I'm glad to hear she's okay. I personally don't like talking about emotional stuff with close family, but maybe I need to once in awhile.

Re: Tell your loved ones you love them

The closest I ever came to anything like that is my neighbors boyfriend who lived below me came to her house one Sunday and shot her, then about 30 seconds later shot himself on her doorstep. I was sleeping and heard the first shot and woke up thinking some kids were shooting off a firecracker. Then about 30 seconds later I heard it again and the second time I realized it was a gun shot. At the time I just figured it was someone in the woods nearby shooting a gun.

Later I woke up and the police were down there and had everything roped off. Someone told me what had happened and all I could think was I felt like I should have done something to stop it. I guess that's the normal reaction. The reality is there's nothing I could have done.

I never really fear for her, but things like this just say "you never know." Thank God he didn't kill anyone. People can do some terrible things. Just glad that we seem to, as a whole, do more good than bad. Bravo to the teacher who stopped him...
Hey Brian, thanks for the message. You're right; I never really worried for my wife's safety at school prior to this happening.

After a couple of days, I think the teachers are all having a hard time in their own way. Everyone feels they could've done something more or something different when the situation happened. My wife has been good and has talked a lot to me and expressed her feelings, but I'm still recommending she seek out a counselor (EAP provides it for free) because it's good to have an outside, independent party listen to you. I'm hopeful that all the teachers spend at least a little time in therapy because, as the principal at Columbine High School told us the other day, you have to take care of yourself or it will cost you down the road.

Damn, Kasey I had no idea. Sorry to hear that.

They absolutely do remind us of what's important in life. It's not making sure players have the right colored socks on in Madden or that uniform numbers are too big in MLB 2K, that's for sure.

DJ, I know what you were trying to express here but I hear this sentiment a lot and I take issue with it. I don't think you can discount everyday, little annoyances simply because they're not part of the "big picture" like life and death. We can't spend all of our time focusing on our loved ones and/or possible tragedies like losing someone or we'd go mad. It's the players in Madden having the wrong sock color that keeps us all sane.

I agree with Odogg. You should definitely tell your loved ones how you feel, but not because of fear of the worst. If we all spent our time worrying about the possibility of tragedy, we wouldn't be able to live. Life is a great thing. I'm gonna max it out as far as I can. When it's my time to go, I'm gone.

I agree 100% with you guys. You can't constantly live in fear and think about worst-case scenarios.

But, I do think there are more important things to think about and discuss than some uniform issues in a video game. If there's a legit issue with gameplay, you better believe I'm making a stink about it Some things, though, I'm willing to look past if the overall package is good.

LOL. I've been playing NCAA 06 a lot recently and it just amazes me that we had more options 5 years ago than we do now when it comes to player models. I'm afraid things could be even worse next year with all these Keller lawsuits putting EA in a bind in regards to the college game.

Swinging this back on subject...my wife went back to school today. They were having an "open house" where parents and students could come by and talk with any teachers or counselors if they wanted. Teachers had the option to either let the parents and students into their room, or they could keep their door closed and do some work. I think my wife said she would talk, but not all day as she is getting a little burned out on re-hashing the day's events over and over again.

I'm sure Monday will be crazy with all the media there covering the first day back to school, but hopefully after that, things will return to the old schedule.

I've never felt that primal adrenaline before to the extent I felt it when I heard the gunshot and guy groaning on the ground. Immediately your awareness skyrockets and it's like I'm assessing exit plans and finding areas to crouch in case the shooter enters the locker room. I remember it like it was yesterday. I've never had that feeling before or after that moment.

Well I would say "I can imagine" but I really can't. The closest I have probably come to that is one day I was crossing the street and looked up and a car was about 30 feet away heading at me fast. I'm a fat guy with a bad knee who used to think I couldn't run anymore but I found out that day it's amazing what you can do with a shot of adrenaline.

Not completely the same thing though considering all things involved but it was pretty scary for about 2 seconds. The biggest difference is I'm sure your incident was longer than 2 seconds of insanity.
