I don't know your details, but I put in that you were 225 like you posted and that you wanted to be 185 in 6 months (Sept 25) and that you are 6ft and have a sedentary lifestyle. This was the result I was given:

    Results

You should consume about 1,658 calories a day to reach your goal weight of 185 lbs by September 25, 2010.

Experts recommend weight loss at the rate of 0.5-2 lbs/week. Remember that this estimate is based on your body weight, height, age, gender, and activity level. It may vary slightly depending on other factors.

Generally, women should not consume any less than 1,200 calories per day, and men should not consume less than 1,500 calories per day.

Oh okay, I did it wrong the first time. I let it pick my end date for me. Here's my latest:

"Goal date too aggressive. Your goal date has been modified to allow you to lose a maximum of 2 pounds per week.

I think those calories per day sites are complete BS. They told me to consume 2,400 a day to lose weight on almost every site I went to. If I ate 2,400 calories a day I'd be gaining 2 pounds a week, not losing 2 pounds a week. My doctor told me 1,500. The bottom line is those sites are taking into account a normal metabolism and most of us with weight problems have a slow metabolism.

Bottom line, use those as a basis if you want but I believe they're way too high. You really have to just play around with caloric intake a month at a time to see what it really should be. Right now i'm doing 1200-1500 calories a day and i'm finally losing. Even when i was in the 1500-1800 range I was unable to lose. My doctor said probably a part of that is calorie portions on food can be wrong and you can miscount.

re: Weight Loss - Tips & Daily Check-in

I'm fine with 1200 honestly, I think my stomach has shrunk. I think about food a few times during the day but I'm not hungry. I think that's where fat people get confused. When I think about food now I will immediately think "man, i'm really hungry.." but then if i question myself "wait...are you really?" and i stop and think about it, i'm not really hungry, i just have this thing in my head that i should go enjoy some food.

learning the difference between hunger and desire to eat has been key for me. i'm doing 1200 without any issue in regards to hunger.

That's pretty low dude. I'd ease into a little bit, it's a lifestyle change and if you make it too drastic at the start it will be harder on you. One meal sometimes can be 800 calories especially if you eat out somewhere. You need to keep balanced meals throughout the day so that you don't put your body in a starvation mode. If you stick to 1600 calories a day you will see the difference. You'll probably lose around 8 lbs a month which is big. Just don't have too many cheat days. Maybe once a week and even then don't go over 2000 calories.

Sounds good to me. I'll shoot for 1500 or 1600. I'll have to get the meal plan laid out tonight. Any good sites or tools (free) that you guys use or just write it down?

Edit: any Itouch or Blackberry tools would work better for me

When I started I didn't have a phone with apps, so I can't help you there. I work on a computer all day, so that sparkpeople.com site worked real well for me. Just come up with a routine of eating like how I posted my times of eating. Always figure the calories out before you eat, lots of people like to look and see how many calories they just ate and that's just not the way you do it because you'll say to yourself "I'll eat less tonight for supper" but when supper rolls around and you are hungry you'll do different. You need to have a plan of how much you can eat for breakfast and lunch so that you know what you have left for dinner. It'll seem like a little extra work for a few days, but then it will become an easier habit.

sparkpeople has an app on the iphone - look for that. also i'd strongly recommend the "eat this-not that" app that men's health puts out.

That's cool. I have all my Biology II students sign up for sparkpeople when we get into the digestive system and nutrition.

They have to keep a food (calorie) log for a month and write a paper on what they learned.

That's awesome man!! Maybe that'll open some eyes! I had my 12 year old niece do it for a week and she said it couldn't be right because she was eating like 4,000 calories a day or something. I said, well didn't you start that log because you were gaining weight? She said "yeah" and I said "well then you probably are eating way too many calories!"

I wish I could say it opened her eyes but it didn't, she's still gaining weight at an incredible pace. She's over 200 pounds now at age 13. But maybe out of all the folks in your class it will help 1 person. And that would make it all worthwhile.

I found the Eat This Not That app but can't find the Sparkpeople app.
