Re: N.C. teacher writes 'loser' on assignments

It really depends on the student.

If it was an A-B student who normally passes everything but slipped up on this test, it's perfectly fine.

If it was a student who tries but legitimately struggles to get good grades then it wouldn't be okay.Comment

Re: N.C. teacher writes 'loser' on assignments

Regardless of what kind of teacher he is and whether or not he just meant it as a joke, it still isn't a very bright thing to do. Why even take the chance and risk a student reacting negatively to it even if it was meant in a joking manner? My Teams

Hah, one of my HS teachers used to say we'd be digging ditches if we didn't keep up our studies. I think a comment like this is fine, but writing out, "Loser." on something is a bit too much. Especially for 6th graders. I don't think this case is toooooo big of a deal (considering some other teacher stories we have here at OS), but it's something that should be stopped because some people are sensitive to this type of thing.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

I agree in theory, but in some respect it contributes to the wussification of American kids. Some kids are sensitive to dodgeball, it's polarizing so don't let them play.Hah, one of my HS teachers used to say we'd be digging ditches if we didn't keep up our studies. I agree. If I was the student in this case, I wouldn't be offended at all. But Joey down the street may come home crying because now he's a loser. The teacher should just stick to the students he knows won't be offended by his joking comments. Don't completely eliminate your teaching style, but just tone it down a notch.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

Re: N.C. teacher writes 'loser' on assignments

Personally I'd laugh as well because by calling me stupid wouldn't that make the teacher innefective in actually, you know teaching?

Anyways this teacher sounds like one of those guys that has a very loose atmosphere in the classroom and is unorthodox to the extreme. If he's been doing this for a while then i'm a bit surprised it took him this long to get some blowback from a parent or student.

People are way too uptight these days IMO while I wouldn't exactly like if if my kid came home with an assignment and a big "loser" was written on it I wouldn't be running off to the top of the chain and try to take the teacher down. I'd use common sense and actually talk to the guy.

Maybe that's what this mother should've done instead of making this a bigger issue then it needs to be.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Yeah...and I don't totally think the "Loser" comment was correct either...Just tone it down and he should be good to go.I agree. If I was the student in this case, I wouldn't be offended at all. Re: N.C. teacher writes 'loser' on assignments

I disagree about him being right about this. Joking or not, writing loser is not the way to go. As a teacher you're suppose to show professionalism and encourage, not insult. Joking is fine but loser from a teacher is a strong word. Unless it's in a conversation said jokingly but when it is put on a piece of work (assignment/test). Then I disagree.Comment

Re: N.C. teacher writes 'loser' on assignments

I still remember my teacher who would throw board erasers if we missed a question or werent' paying attention. It was great. Those are the ones who make a difference and actually get through to you.

Overprotection and the need to be offended by anything (or everything) is a common theme these days. Let the teacher teach the way he wants - he's obviously getting through to the students.Comment
