Being from South Florida I have a few thoughts about this:
1. My main "shoes" are a pair of retired Bonefish Flops, which I've had about 6 months now. Paid $70 for these and they're more comfy then my Timberland Slip On Shoes I paid $90 for. Don't get me wrong I love my Timbs, but if it's not snowing or closed shoes are not required I'm probably in the flops.
2. Any type of "Sandal" that you strap around the back of your ankle or you wear with socks is ********. It just looks dumb, a lot of the younger generation love the Birkenstocks because they're "sport" sandals. This is ******** in it's own right, if you are going hiking you probably want a pair of sneaks, not some strap on sandals. To go along with that, part of the whole theory behind flops is not having to wear socks. If you are wearing socks with your flops you're going to look like a goob. It's not cool, it's not trendy, if you're wearing them with socks for any reason other then you're comfy that way, then you're doing it wrong. You may not care, and I really don't care what others do, I can assure you I'm not alone on this opinion.
3. Anybody who thinks closed soles should worn by men clearly has never lived in a place where it is >90 degrees half of the year. Most men trim the fingernails and don't think anything about it. Trim your damn toes, while you're at it, wash your stinky ### feet and throw some flops on. Taking care of yourself doesn't make you homosexual/metrosexual/marssexual/venussexual...etc.
