Major bomb scare in NYC
Luckily it seems they were able to "defuse" this thing before it exploded. Really scary stuff.
Investigators removed three propane tanks, fireworks, two filled 5-gallon gasoline containers, and two clocks with batteries, electrical wire and other components from the back of the Nissan Pathfinder, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. A black metal box resembling a gun locker was also recovered and will be detonated off site, he said.Oklahoma State Cowboys 2011 Big XII Champions, 2012 Fiesta Bowl Champions

Re: Major bomb scare in NYC
this has been my 2nd biggest concern since 9/11, right behind bio terrorism....been concerned that one day our streets would look like those in the middle east, car bombs exploding on a daily basis, military having to police the daily activities.....hopefully we can stop itI'm a Vince McMahon Guy!

Re: Major bomb scare in NYC
It would have been a pretty damn big explosion. Plus, the shrapnel from the car would have been ridiculous, plus it probably would have caught several buildings on fire. Not to mention the sheer amount of people walking the streets...
My guess is that would have killed, at least, 75+ people and injured a ton more.Too Old To Game Club

Re: Major bomb scare in NYC
I heard this news late last night from a friend and it taught me a lesson on frustration.
I jumped on a train at 6 pm heading to 42nd St just a block away from where this car was discovered. Normally, I would have reached my destination in 30 minutes, but it took an hour and a half. I didn't get there until 7:30 and I was frustrated because I was now 30 minutes late to something I should have been 30 minutes early to. The conductors on the train would only say: "We're experiencing delays, please be patient."
I was patient but you can only be patient for so long. I mean, an hour and a half for a thirty minute trip? It's frustrating.
But, now I'm sure I understand why. Thank goodness this bomb was amateurish and didn't go off. There were thousands of people walking in a radius of two blocks on Times Square. The damage would have been tragic to a great number of people. Plus, that block is home to seven theaters. If those theaters go on fire, there are people stuck inside.
The City dodged a big one."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Major bomb scare in NYC
It would have probably been a nice sized fireball, but not really a destructive explosion. Gasoline won't even burn unless it's vaporized, and it won't explode unless those vapors are compressed in the correct gasoline oxygen mixture. Propane cylinders would be hard to get to explode as well, they are engineered with release valves and such to greatly reduce the chance of explosion.
Not knowing how the thing was set up, the "fireworks" are the unknown quantity in this, I'd guess the cans would be set up to leak and set the car on fire, worst case at that point would be the release valve on the cylinders opening (or fireworks set to blow the valves off) and they become a projectile. The black metal box could have been the real purpose of all this though, fill it with black powder or anfo, use the fire to ignite and boom.Comment

When the relief valves let go...they blowtorch...but at some point...they will likely bleve...as those relief valves are not for cases of fire or terrorism(which will heat the liquid too quickly for it to release fully)...and can be tampered with with to not work....and while yes...it's the vapors of the gasoline that actually burn..once ignited...what's the difference really....
Here is vid of a propane tank on fire in a vehicle....note the explosion at the end.....just about when we would get there(they LOVE that).....
This is NOT the first we are seeing of this in N.Y.C.
Just had it happen to us in Jamaica....perhaps a test run?! You bet...

Re: Major bomb scare in NYC
I heard about this last night and boy was I glad it didn't go off. We don't need more crazy crap going on in NYC. Unfortunately in the back of my mind i'd been wondering what took these people so long to attempt something like this. It's pretty sad and scary when you know something this destructive can be done relatively easily.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Burns....I beg to differ on almost all counts.

This guy is going to be the Laughing stock of all terrorists, the only people that are more pathetic than him are the dudes who blow themselves up putting on a Suicide Vest.
Even if this thing did blow up, it probably would not have killed anyone. It would basically be a slow chain reaction, the Fireworks were supposed to Ignite the Gas, the Gas would ignite the Propane Tanks, and that would create a explosion in conjunction with the Fertilizer. It sounds like a good Car Bomb but it would never create the kind of explosion needed to kill multiple people. My dog's butt smells like cookiesComment
