I'm not exactly sure how you put a lid on illegal downloading, though.
That's the key, right there. What do you do? It's been over 10 years since Napster came out and completely changed the music industry, and there hasn't been anything that's kept people from downloading illegally. iTunes helped, sure. And those subscription services can't be doing a bad thing. But still, tons of people are getting their music illegally because it's so easy.

The movie industry seems to be doing a decent job at limiting downloaded movies. I know of at least three people close to me who have gotten into trouble for downloading movies. Maybe it's easier to police that, I don't know.

Either way, I think it's to the point where artists need to find other ways of making money. Like I said, some adapt. I'm not a fan of 50 Cent's music, but the man is nearly a genius in the business world. He seems to have figured it out.

I buy a Blu-ray or two every week, so that's not even in the discussion.

As far as music, I am a musician myself so I actually pay for my music like everyone should. I buy 95% of it through iTunes though because compact discs are all but obsolete these days. I already have over 1,000 of them in boxes in my basement and all they do is take up space. I already have everything on both of my iPods and have them backed up digitally in several different formats. No need to keep buying CDs that will end up in a landfill within the next 10-20 years or so.

I buy a CD just about every week. The last one I bought was Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. I like having a hard-copy and I like using CDs in the car. I wish I had a record player, though. That's where the fun is at, IMO.

The last movie I bought was The House of The Devil on blu-ray.

I never pirate movies or music. I buy both - but I generally buy music from iTunes; so I haven't bought a CD in a while.

Re: When Was The Last Time U Bought A CD Or Movie?

I still buy CD's every month or so. I don't know why, but I like having the case and the booklet and the hard copy of the disk. There is something special about buying a new CD, opening it up, and thumbing through the booklet while giving it a first listen. It's also nice to have a hard copy as I am totally screwed if my hard drive crashes.

I need to break the habit though. Too many artists offer free extra crap when you buy it online compared to when you buy it in store that you end up missing out by putting forth more effort.

However, I'm already looking forward to stopping off at Best Buy at lunch in a few weeks and picking up the new Black Keys CD.

The only time I ever buy movies is from the Previously viewed section at Blockbuster when they have them for like 3 for $30 or 4 for $25. Then we'll usually drop $40 or $50 and have 8-10 movies that will last us the next few months.

Re: When Was The Last Time U Bought A CD Or Movie?

I collect Blu Ray's and when I buy them I usually get 5-6 at once. I have a rule that I can't buy one for more than $20 so, I don't spend to much $$ on my collection. However, I am finding that I rarely watch movies more than once so, it is some what of a wasteful hobby. I have also been using Net Fliz quite a bit.

As far I music goes, the last CD's I bought was on a whim when I my girlfriend and I were on a road trip to my parent's house last Thanksgiving. We bought John Mayer's. Dave Matthew's (new CD's), Van Morrison, (&) Hall & Oats Greatest Hit's, The Muse and it seem's like something else but, I can't remember what.

Honestly, I think that burning CD's in the mid to late 90s kind of ruined music for me. Mainly because when I was a teenager I listened to cassette tapes. My friends and I would listen to every single song on the tapes and I would usually end up liking the less popular song's more than the ones that got a lot of radio time. Once I started burning CD's I would just download the A tracks and rarely listened to the lesser known song's. Also, that caused me to get really tired of those song's much faster and that is why I say burning music ruined music for me. (If that makes sense)

Also, I don't have an Ipod or MP3 player because honestly I really don't care about music that much anymore. Occasionally, I listen to Pandora at work but, it's mostly talk radio for me.

I don't buy CD's often unless I truly feel compelled to support the band (though I still buy all of my music through iTunes), but I buy movies all of the time. If I feel they are good enough or rewatchable, they get that worthy Blu-ray purchase from me. I own over 110 Blu-rays as we speak and watch them all.

Dang man. I think I started before you but we've gone in opposite directions. I've sold about half of my collection and you've doubled yours. What was the last blu purchase?

I just got the Dirty Harry collection in and pre-ordered the Karate Kid.

Very tempted to go ahead and buy Varsity Blues since it's $12 on Amazon.

The thing is that most of them were DVD's (I had about that number going into my first two Blu-ray purchases of The Departed and 300... haven't bought a DVD since), and I sold them to other people and got the Blu-ray versions in return. Now I only own 29 DVD's. Amazing how many I was able to sell.

Most people don't realize how cheap blu rays can be gotten for. A lot of times it's cheaper than the DVD if you know where to look. Of the 150 I've owned (at one point) only 3 of them was more than $15. I've slowed down since my apt. got broken into and somebody swiped 30 blus along with the PS3 and my HDTV.
