Here's what I relate it to...
I'm 6-3 215 lbs and if somebody my size comes up to me and starts to attack me and I defend my self by hitting that person in the face with a metal stick...I think it's a bit of a stretch but I could articulate my actions.
Now put me up against a 5-year old kid who is coming towards me aggressively and is going to attack me and I hit him in the face with a metal stick.
I relate this case to example #2
Here's part of the story, just another article with more detail:
After calling out an apology to the meter reader, Newman told her husband to get the dog and turned around to put her son in his stroller and calm him down. Newman's husband stopped to put on his shoes before starting down the street to get Calisto. He was approached by the meter reader saying there was something wrong with their dog.<!--googleoff: all-->
<!--googleon: all-->"She was up against the (retaining) wall, bleeding," Newman said. "Obviously he had just hit her."<!--googleoff: all-->
<!--googleon: all-->Newman said she immediately took Calisto to the animal care center where she was euthanized because of the extent of her injuries.<!--googleoff: all-->
<!--googleon: all-->The veterinarian, Parker, said she and other staff members were shocked to find out her injuries were inflicted by a person.<!--googleoff: all-->
<!--googleon: all-->"Everybody that saw her come in ... thought that she was hit by a car," Parker said. "It had to be a significant blow."<!--googleoff: all-->
<!--googleon: all-->Newman wants other pet owners to learn from her story.<!--googleoff: all-->
<!--googleon: all-->"I am hoping ... it will save at least one family and one dog from the pain of what she went through and what we are left to deal with," she said.<!--googleoff: all-->
