I've laughed at this plently of times. My sociology teacher pointed this out to me. I'm not sure when it was I'm thinking the 60's or 70's, he said the temperature was a little cooler than normal and scientist predicted we'd have another ice age. LOL

Yeah, global temperatures have, in general, been climbing since the little ice age which ended around 1800. However, from the 1940s-1970s, global temperatures were on the decline, which prompted many doomsday predictions about how an ice age was upon us (such as THIS article in 1975 from Newsweek).

From the late 1970s until 1998, the temperature climbed nearly ever year (except 1992 after the Mt. Pinatubo eruption). Since 1998, we haven't had a year as warm, but temperatures are still higher than they've been in recorded history.

There was also mass alarmism in 2007 after the ice sheets melted down to around 4 million sq. km extent, but since then they've recovered very nicely with a 5.5 million sq. km minimum last year.

The computer models which are used to predict future climate failed miserably to predict the 10-year halt in rise of temperatures which we are currently undergoing. Also, climate is a relatively new science that we don't understand that well, so it's hard to make a reliable climate model. If you put garbage in, garbage will come out.

Anyways, in short, I think this article is BS.

the sun will eventually become so hot that liquid water evaporates off this planet in a billion years anyways.

Pfft, from reading the article it just sounds like a worst case scenario being used to attempt to get peoples attention. It even says only a 50/50 chance this will happen.

Thanks for that clarification. I knew it was sometime, though its before my time. Just funny how the temperature raised, dropped saw an ice age prediction, then is rising again and sceintist point of worst case scenerios to catch attention and worry people.

Yeah, there's a lot of theories out there, but no one truly knows for sure what exactly has influenced the warming temperatures over the last 200 years. Whatever has caused it (and there have been many factors), it's happened since the Earth's formation and there's no reason to think that the Earth's climate will not continue to change well into the future.

There are a lot of people that think we may be heading towards another cooldown over the next 20-30 years with a cooling PDO and less sunspots, but we shall see, I guess.
