Great thread! I love the part about the cartoons. I remember waiting all week for Saturday mornings. Now they have 24/7 cartoon channels.

Also, it makes you wonder what the next generation will be like.

You guys were mentionining action figures. I for whatever reason was niever into them and never had any unless you count the couple years I was in to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I don't remember watching to many of those action cartoons either. I was mainly into dinosaurs, legos, and matchbox cars when I was a kid.

i miss my under 12 days.
        so fun.

-listening to the beastie boys cassette- the one that read "eatme" if you put it to a mirror
-playing street hcokey in my neighbors driveway and breaking all 8 glass sections of his parents garage windows
-playing wiffleball with my wiffle ball bat taped in electric tape- along with the holes of the wiffleball
-hitting rocks with the wiffleball bat
-smacking the full rolls of caps with a huge rock and losing hearing for 5 minutes
-starting small fires to my fathers plants
        -ding dong ditch
-playing legend of zelda on the nintendo for a full summer
        -feeding toads to gartner snakes

        aah fun times

The thing missing about waiting all week for cartoons was the fact that we also waited all year for Fall previews that showed the new cartoons that would be coming out as well. I still remember the previews for Kid n Play, Hammer Man and Back to the Future. Those were the days man, when the 3 major networks would battle it out for the attention of the pre-teen Saturday morning crowd.

This thread really illustrates the problems that arise when life becomes so convenient that you no longer can appreciate the good moments for the lack of the bad. That, in general, is what is wrong with today's youth IMO. Without the bad it makes it difficult to appreciate the good in life.

I'm 20. Although some things listed in the original post, like cell phones, make life harder on kids today because parents always have their child on speed dial. The 30+ year olds have no idea what that's like... just saying.

lol, well let me tell you one thing. When my dad said to be home at this time or check in at this time, I better have done it or my *** was fried! So I was always in check.

Re: When I was growing up...

I think the biggest shift in American society is that many parents want to be friends with their kids. (Also have a bunch of kids raising kids. Back in the day it was embarrassing to be a teenage parent....now kids wear it like a badge of courage)

The worst is when you see a parent and kid arguing and you have no idea who is the parent and who is the child.

My parents house was always a democracy...just that me and my brother didn't have a vote.

you could just not answer the phone. LOL

And growing up, we didn't have our own personal cell phone.

                      haha- no kidding man.
If i wasnt home at a certain time, my dad would take that plastic stick off the blinds in our house, and he would whip me with that sucker. Oh the pain!!

                        That's what he just said.

And not answering your phone would be like being late for curfew I guess. I didn't get a cell phone til I was 16. But my little brother got one when he was 9, WTF.

I know, but he said it made life harder, and I was implying that we didn't have personal cell phones. We had to use the house phone, so there was no, "private" conversations, unless you were priviledged enough to have a phone in your room, which most didn't.

Also, if someone else needed the phone or parents were expecting a call, you were on a very short leash.

Oh ok gotcha..I had to do the same thing. And I lived with 5 brothers so if a girl or one of my friends called me, you could bet someone was listening in on the other phone lol. And then If I wanted to get on the dial-up internet I had to make sure the other 7 people in my house didn't have to use the phone. And I'm only 21!

Let's see if anybody's with me on this one...

When I was growing up, I had an NES and my two favorite games were Tecmo Bowl and Bad News Baseball. Neither game kept stats, so my cousin and I would take turns writing out the roster and keeping track of all the stats we could think of. We would do this for an entire season and played dozens of seasons on both games. We would usually use one piece of paper for each game we played.

It was fun and both my cousin and I are pretty good at math.

Sometimes we would also take a tape recorder and do voice-overs for the play-by-plays, especially when SNES came out with NBA Jam.

Hand-written stats and personal commentary, it just doesn't get any better.

My favorite sports video game moment was finally beating my dad at Double Dribble. At one point I was averaging 130 pts a game. Didn't taste defeat til I got to college.

Also remember winning a Pete Rose rookie card from my cousin who thought he was good at Bases Loaded. Beat him down with Jersey and kept his card.

Didn't need to do play-by-play when Joe Montana 2: Sports Talk football came out. One of my favorite sports game of all time. You could play horizontal or side scrolling.
